I have a zoned heated/cooled home. 2 goodman units, and 2 digital/programable White/ROdgers thermostats. The zone i am concerned w/ is my bedroom zone. It encompasses the master bedroom and bathroom, office, and another half bathroom. The thermo is in our room under the return. we have 2 vents in our room and 3 others in the masterbath, watercloset, and closet (ie 5 vents feeding air to just that area). One vent in the mens bathroom and one in the office. Both units are the same size and same BTU. the other unit heats/cools the rest of hte house (house is approx 2500sf). Here is my prob: the thermo in my bedroom doesnt seem to be reading the correct temp. let's say the other side of the house says 79 degrees (pretty typical as we usually turn up the a/c on that side when we go to bed) and the ac in my room says 78...well there is a discernable difference between the two..ie my room is NOT 78 degrees. Ive calibrated the temp down 3 degrees and it takes FOREVER for it to reach the desired temp...and it still doesnt seem correct. The office and the mens bathroom is alot cooler..i mean alot, than our bedroom and they only have the one vent. we keep the doors on the bedroom, office, and mensbathroom shut and leave the doors open in our master bath, closet etc. i almost thought it was a freon leak but that would make the other rooms feel not as cool right? I am at my whits end trying to figure out what is up. BTW. the house is just one year old as of april 15th. HELP.

First of all, this probably belongs in Gadgets and Gear, so don't be surprised if it gets moved.

Second, ambient humidity will have a noticeable effect on the performance of your A/C. It sounds like the bathrooms are both on the zone giving you trouble. It uses up a lot of BTUs condensing water out of the air, water that gets put there by showers, hand washing, etc.

Third, rather than closing doors, try partially closing the vents in the cooler rooms to force more air to the warmer rooms. If closing some vents doesn't yield more airflow in the others, either the ducts are undersized or there is something blocking them.

Fourth, buy a few thermometers and set them in the various rooms to see what the temperatures actually are. It helps to be able to say "the bedroom is seven degrees warmer than the hall" rather than "it feels warmer in here to me." That way, if you have to call for service, you can give the tech some hard data.

I suggest you call the contractor who built the house, and get his HVAC guy out there before the warranty expires.

The year warranty expired on 04/15/2010...before we even needed the ac...wasnt doing this last year :(

Ouch.

I'm wondering if the zone control damper for that side of the system is opening all the way, or if there is a leak in the main for that zone?

Start at the plenum, and work towards that side of the house. Also make sure that damper is opening all the way when the system kicks on.

Have you changed the filter? Check that as well.
