It turns out that the thick piece of steel that I had seen at my knife friends house was A-2 not 440C.Any thoughts?

A-2 is tougher, should work great! i am not sure what RC to have it at for chopping. phil hartsfield does his knives and swords to RC-61 i belive. paul bos will know.

An old chart I have shows axes tempered at 500 F.degrees, a brown yellow color. No steel type noted.

A2
Crucible shows 500 F. at RC60 and Charpy toughness at 41.
Crucible again 1000 F. @ RC57 and Charpy toughness at 41.
Crucible lists reduction in Charpy at 600 to 900 F., the highest @41.
