Would a Spyderco Lum make a good EDC?

waddya think, anyone have this knife, like it?
if it's not a good EDC then what is it good for?

I think so. I only carry mine occasionally, but it is a very practical knife for general utility. As long as your primary focus is not on defense I think the Lum Chinese would make a fine EDC. It is a strong cutter.

There's the Lum Tanto and the Lum Chinese. Very different knives. But I give a "hell yes" to both.

yes lum tanto is a good edc - thats what i use mine for, best tanto for that role too imho - and the blade is almost exactly the same size/profile as my BM 975SBT, a 'magnum' tanto according to some - a good knife - dont have a chinese, but heard its good too

I'll join in with a thumbs up for the Lum tanto. My only gripe is that, when clipped in, the knife rides a little too far out of the pocket for my tastes. Aside from that, it's a great knife.

This may sound ignorant, but I remeber reading once that the Chinese culturally preferred the leaf-shaped blade such as that on the Lum. Is that true, and is this the reason why the knife looks as it does and is so named?

Razor, Bob Lum actually designed this knife after a traditional Chinese utility blade. Somewhere in the Archives there is a thread with a picture of the actual knife, an antique Cantonese blade if I remember correctly.

Hi all. I recently purchased a Lum Tanto (not the spyderco) and think highly of it as a fighter/defense knife, won't use it for much else. Though the leverage, length and angle of blade sure would make for smooth and easy cutting of any sort.

That's great news, because I am trying to decide which knife to order for my first *quality* product...I'm liking the Spyderco Lum Tanto a lot, glad to hear that it is highly thought of :)

For whatever it's worth, I originally meant a Lum Tanto... but this has turned out to be a moot point, since i've yet to find a spydie that's wide enough for my big hands... and i'm certain the Lum doesn't fit that bill.

I guarantee that a Spyderco Military will be plenty big enough for your hands...

Give it a try...

Mundele,

the problem is WIDTH, not length, i've tried out the Military, Police, and Native... the native came closest but is still hardly the handfiller that the Emersons are... for me anywho.

I suppose I could try a Chinook if they have em, but right now the only knife i've seen genuinely worthy for my carry is the Emerson CQC7 Tanto... sweet knife, but I could browse a little more...

Bottom line is if i'm gonna spend $100 or so dollars on a knife, it better fit right, I'm not knocking spydies... they just don't seem to fit me thats all.

Well, the Military is a thin knife. that's one of the reasons I love it though.

Too bad it doesnt fit ya...
