Would anyone like to see this?

I'm not sure if this topic has been discussed before, but I'd like to propose an idea. What would everyone say to adding an index of custom makers to Blade Forums. I'm envisioning a simple alphabetical spreadsheet type listing of those custom makers who are regular contributors to the forums. The listing could include a few categories to help describe where a particular maker's interests lie. Perhaps we could include fields for info describing what knife types the maker produces (i.e. fixed vs folder), blade steels used, preferred blade shapes, preferred handle materials and possibly even their current work backlog.

I think this would be a super resource for those of us contemplating custom purchases; especially the newer members. If we got really fancy (Mike and Spark, step in any time and tell me to shut the hell up), maybe a basic search function could even be included. A prospective buyer could select on "fixed blade", "bowie" and "52100", hit enter and see what comes up. It would give us a good place to start. Who knows, this database may even turn out to be of use to the makers themselves if say a maker were looking to experiment with a new steel or handle material for example. Just an idea. Opinions welcome.

Hey Bronco?
Do you just get some sort of sick thrill out of making Spark cry?

I can't begin to imagine the amount of work such a project would be, but it would be WAY cool!
Especially the search engine!
Great idea, but I'm afraid way too labor intensive to be practical.
*Unless, hmmm. Hey Mike, you hiring?*
LOL!

I cut it, and I cut it, and it's STILL too short!

Such an exhaustive list already exists over on Marion`s website. Unfortunately, I don`t have the URL, but if you look up any of Marion`s posts he has the URL in his sig file.

His list of makers is HUGE and detailed. No need to replicate his work here, just post a link.

There are never too many list on the makers. A little free advertising never hurt anyone. I've found that there are more custom makers than anyone can imagine and we all need to support the arts.

There's already the links page here at bladeforums.

knifeart.com and knifedirectory.com are both good resources.

I also happened to notice that knifelinks.com is now registered. No site yet. So, maybe someone's got something in the works.

Ken, I swear I'm not trying to torture Spark. I hope this thread doesn't lead to me getting tossed outa here.

Anyway, thanks for the responses thus far gents. If I may, allow me to clarify a couple of things.

Let's remember that this would first and foremost be a resource for forum members who are looking to have a knife created. Link pages are great, but I'm trying to avoid making folks visit a hundred maker's websites to find the three or four makers (or 15 or 20)who specialize in the type of knife in which they're interested. Our list could certainly include hyperlinks to websites or email addresses, but wouldn't it streamline the process to know beforehand that the site you're visiting will address your particular needs.

Also, it is not my intention to try and sell this resource as the all inclusive, "industry standard" listing of every knife maker who has ever walked the planet. I'd like to see something that focuses on those custom makers who contribute to our forums and who give us the benefit of their time and wisdom so freely. The list would only be as good as the info it contains and I think we'd want it to feature makers who have an interest in ensuring their info is up to date.

Tom and Steve, thanks for the info on those lists which are already in existance. I was unaware of them and will certainly give them a look.

Don't forget to check our links listing...

There's plenty of custom makers there, and you can add yourself at any time.

I'm probably going to replace the links section with a SQL-backend software package in the near future, so that should make for some interesting changes....

Thanks for the info Spark. I'm not familiar with the SQL software package you mentioned. Is there any chance this would support some type of search function?
