I plan on getting on new knife sometime in the future (what else is new?). Well anyways i'm having some trouble deciding. I plan on using it for EDC. I want it to be in the 50-80$ price range.

For a folding knife i want it to have a 3-5" blade. Can handle most cutting chores and some light abuse.

For fixed i was thinking a 3-5" blade for it as well. Preferably something not to obtrusive.

I've narrowed it down to the Buck folding Alpha dorado with ATS-34 blade, Cold steel X2 voyager plain edged, or a becker necker.

Any thoughts on these knives?

Thanks for all the help:)

Not the answer i was looking for but thanks anyways.

I also don't want a response like "if you spend a little more you can get .............". 50-80$ if my price range.

No, but don't overlook Cabela's Griptillian (Benchmade) in D2 Steel. Plain or combo edge and IMO you cannot go wrong with D2 or the Axis Lock.

Red, I cant even picture the Buck, but I trust the company. :)

Becker makes great knives, but I found the Necker wasn't one of them, for me. It's too small a handle and the notch at the butt cut into my palm. Putting handle slabs or cord wrap on it defeats the value of a skeleton handle necker.

I've been using a Vaquero Grande as a kind of folding machete for years. Can't damage it. Tough, sharp, and ugly. I picked up the X2 Voyager as the better-looking replacement for it. Mistake. The hollow-ground edge couldn't take the abuse that the flat-ground Vaquero laughed off. The edge rippled and later a chunk broke off. I do not recommend the X2 for really hard use.

Recommendations. I don't know current prices, but you should be able to get a good buy on a CRKT, maybe one of the Carson M-16 line. They hold up. Spyderco has to have something in that price range -- I like the Native a lot, and the Endura is THE classic, at about 4".

Fixed blade, definitely check out the Scandinavians. Not the expensive hunters -- go for a Mora, in fact, I think the Mora 2000 is in your range for price and size. Best little slicers out there, tough, and so light you can wear them like neck knives -- just not upside down. :)

Oh another question.

How are the CRKT M-21's?

P.S.- I already looked at the D2 griptillian and forgot to add that to my list

Seriously...Get a Benchmade Griptilian. You really "can't go wrong" with one of those, and there are many models to choose from.

I realize it is UNDER your price range, but if you added a nickel you could get the AG Russell KaBar Dozier for 49.95 in D2.

:)

I love the Necker. Handle doesn't bother me, and I like the bottle opener on the end. Just goes to show you how ergonomics is very much an individual thing. Other alternative would be one of Ragnar's 3" moras for about $9.50. They're scary sharp and very useful.

Have fun with all of the alternatives.

I like the Benchmade Monochrome an Cammilus Heat. You can get either under $50 if you look around. I really enjoy the BM. It is thin enough to wear when I'm in an office setting but not too obvious. The Heat holds a great edge and the robo assist opening is cool. Both are really easy one handed openers and closers. I use these knives every day, and use them pretty hard. Both nice cheap EDC thaqt don't make you flinch when you drop them or hit an unseen metal staple in a box you're opening. All in all, I like the benchmade better, but recommend both.

Definately the necker. If you dont like the handle (whick I think is good) have a bit of fun and put some 550 cord on, the are tons of ways wrap it up.

Like i was saying in a recent thread, The M21 is a nice knife for the price point.

The grip, is a great entry model into the Benchmade line of knives.

I would go with either of these of the listed ones i know of.
