Been used for loooonnnnngggg time for coins. Acetone removes it. Seems it would be a good preservative for carbon steel collector blades.

John Greco uses it on some of his knives. It adheres better if the blade is beadblasted. I have a large tanto of his I bought back in april made of 5160. No rust yet.

I have half-heartedly tried spraying carbon steel blades in my shop tp prevent rust. It sort of worked, but I didn't coat them heavily enough.
I'm sure a heavy coat of lacquer will prevent rust.

It would be an oxygen barrier, so it should.

Longevity in use might not be so good, but probably better than wax.

I have used the .99 cent clear coat from W-mart on my Collins (1080?) with good results. It holds up better than I thought it would. Lacquer has been used to coat hammer heads for eons. Just clean the steel, I use rubbing alcohol. Hope this helped.
