Hello again, good people. I have an unlikely friend who is a self-proclaimed feminist. And yes, she's a liberal. That's okay, she's pretty interesting most of the time. However, she is constantly refering to my knives as "phallic symbols" and I can't tell you how much this irritates me

(that was my first mad smiley) So, I want to get her back, and I want you to help me. I'd like a fairly inexpensive (ie production) that was designed by a woman, so I can show it off to my friend. Almost any knife will do, but I would prefer high quality (anything under $200 will be okay) I already know about the ladyhawk, but I normally prefer something bigger. If this is the only one that anyone knows of, that's okay, but I would prefer something else. Anyway, thanks, I can just hear my friend uttering curses about how these poor women became twisted and were forced to design knives by a male-dominated society. Now THAT will be fun.

Hi Ed,

SOG Specialty Knives, Inc. is co-owned by a husband and wife team: Spencer and Gloria Frazer. Together, they started the company about 14 years ago. Gloria has been involved in the day-to-day operations of the company from day one and hasn't slowed down a bit. Her interest in knives and tools (though Spencer is the chief designer) has been instrumental in the success of the company.

I know there are woman designing knives and involved in leadership of some knife companies. SOG also employees many women who are knife enthusiasts.

Hope this helps you with your friend. I know you are looking for a knife to hand her, but information like this should help your discussions.

Ed,

There was a series of custom folders that were made lately (as in two years ago) in which different knife makers / users specified their blade of choice.

One of them was a lady fighter/ instructor of Hispanic origin, who's name I forgot (could be Garcia?) maybe someone here will remember more details - or I'll have to go to my TK archive and dig it up...

No two feminists are alike (some are very reasonable in my view)..sounds like you have a looney man-hating (sexist and prejudiced), not so intelligent, MacKinnon-type on your hands (so to speak).

The phallic stuff she is so obsessed with probably speaks of her own fears/fascinations...I wouldn't even waste my time with people like that.

Blilous, you probably mean the Masters of Defense series, which features the (da dah dummmmmmm) LadyHawk designed by Graciela Casillas-Boggs.

I know that there's a female Art Knife maker out there that produces some fantastic work, Gus K mentioned her name to me once in passing but I can't remember it for the life of me...

Ed,
A new maker in Colorado is Lynn Dawson.
She can be reached via knives.com or via http://www.knives.com/lynn.html
Not production knives but custom with some very interesting shaped knives. I especially like the look of her friction folders. I haven't held one so can make no comment on quality.

Hey Spark,

Dellana is the maker (Most likely gleaned more awards last year for her work including Blades Custom Knife of the year.

If she was second to a maker (as far as awards go), it was most likely her husband Van Barnett. Some of their work can be seen at my photopoint site (there is a link in my profile). (Keep in mind Dellana's waiting list is over 3 years last I heard). If you would like some higher res photos of her work to show your friend email me.

Diana Casteel is another fine female maker along with Audra and Delana that I would consider. There are others that also deserve consideration.

Diana Casteel does great work but she is not cheap. There's always the Weanie Whacker by Lorena Bobbitt.

Thanks for all of the responses. I would like to stick up for my friend though. She's a very smart lady. And she's really not a man-hating feminist, but she does make fun of my knives. It is really more of a friendly chide than anything. but it still drives me nuts, and this must be avenged. (and if I get a new knife out of the deal, so much the better)

Fallkniven WM1

Tea drinker and hellraiser from Northern Sweden, above the arctic circle.

There is a knifemaker named Ken Largin and his wife has a small line of knives. They look pretty well made and are priced at around $100. They can be contacted at 765-647-0003 or www.kelgin.com

Cousin Cinnamon may be on to something here. Isn't Fallkniven a family run operation and isn't the WM1 designed for women? Perhaps, female input played a significant role in the design of the WM1. It would fit your criteria for a relatively inexpensive production type knife and it actually looks like a blade designed by and for a woman. Perhaps a little research in this direction is in order?

I've seen Dellana's work in person, and in my
opinion, she makes some of the most beautiful, investment quality art folders I've ever seen (very expensive). The awards shes won have been well deserved.

Another female maker not mentioned yet is Judy Gottage, who makes some very nice interframes and autos.

Since I tend to collect and carry SMALL folders, I find the phallic reference distressing :0
