I would like to get a used 30-30 deer rifle. Any one know a good place to look?

Check your local pawn shops. You should be able to pick one up used for around $175.00 or so.

I got a pre-64 Model 94 for a good buy at a pawn shop a couple of years ago. It has been killing deer for me ever since.:)

hehe- back in the 60's, when I was in the army, we had a "Rod & Gun club" on post. This was actually a bar with an attached firearms sales establishment. (no, I am not kidding...)

Anyway, we hung out there a lot, talking guns, and buying them at the ridiculously cheap prices. One night, a lad came in and announced that he wanted a "deer rifle."
The guy behind the counter (a "spook" captain in Military intelligence...) pointed out that there were many models which would be fine for deer hunting.
The lad said, "No, a DEER rifle...Like that one!" (Pointing to a Winchester 94) To him, the only concievable deer rifle was an M94...

Not a thing wrong with the concept. My deer rifle is a Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70, with iron sights. I can handload it down to a proper load, or use a commercial round with a 300 grain bullet.

Most midwestern whitetail are shot at 50 yards. A lever action 30-30 is an excellent choice.

The Marlin model 336 in 30-30 is an excellent lever-action rifle to get...That was the first "real" rifle I bought for my son after he graduated from his Ruger 10-22 autoloader.

Nothing wrong with a .30-30 rifle. I have a couple of these, and its hard to say which one is my favorite. My old Winchester 94 is a great shooting gun, accurate and is very light. However, I prefer the Marlin because I really like the action, and "I" am more accurate with it than the Winchester. I also like the side ejection. I have this model gun chambered in .35 Remington as well.

Hit the local pawn shops like someone mentioned above, and you might, just might find one from $125 and up. I bought a 1971 model in excellent shape for $125 a couple of years ago from a local pawn shop.

GOOD LUCK!!:)

And BTW, I forgot to add that other calibres, like the 38-55 and similar cartidges in the lever action, are equally good for those mid-range shots.

Ammo companies still make the oldies, and loading dies and csting blocks abound.

Take a look at a 30-30 Pump... yes pump...
Savage model 170...
It's a very cool deer gun...
Should be able to find them for under $200 now..
Fitted with a nice scope, there is nothing better.

My 30-30 is a 1930's vintage Winchester M 94 that I bought in near mint condition a couple of years ago. It's nice rifle. It isn't as accurate as the Marlin 336 I had in college. While I really like my vintage 94, I think I'd suggest the Marlin if you intend to hunt with it because of its superior accuracy. Take care.
