Would someone explain Spyderco Damascus to me?

Would one of you steel experts (or Sal) please explain the Damascus used on the Delica and Endura. I read somewhere that it is not a true folded Damascus steel, but is clad somehow. Is this better in any way, or not as stong? What are the advantages and disadvantages? How do they get so many layers? I am assuming, perhaps wrongly, that it is clad in the same manner as ZDP-189 blades have been?

Thanks,

Doc:confused:

Yes, it's clad, but it's a VG-10 core clad with true folded damascus. Most Japanese damascus is done that way, with either a VG-10 or ZDP-189 core, and the VG-10 core is the most common. The advantage is that you're getting the edge holding of VG-10 combined with the look of a damascus blade. The disadvantage, is that the damascus pattern is limited to the area above the exposed VG-10 core.

Personally, I wish Spyderco could ask both Moki and G Sakai to tone down the etch they use on their damascus, it's way too contrasty for my tastes. I'd far prefer omething subtle, like the etch on the Seto damascus kitchen knives they sell. However, I'm only one customer, so I don't expect it to happen.

Thanks, Deacon, for the explanation. I had been looking at a Delica Damascus but was unsure what to make of the steel.

Glad I could be of help. I just wish the Japanese were not so full of themselves and were willing to use Damasteel.

See i am the other way. I love the contrast on my stretch. :)
I'm sure you're not the only one. In fact, I'd bet more would agree with you than with me.

I love how the Stretch looks, but I can see where a more "toned down", less contrast look could be very appealing on certain models.

Like on the Ti Military or the stepped Ti Chap

How sick would it be if Sal talked to Chad Nichols or Rob Thomas or Damasteel to do an American/Taiwanese sprint in a wicked dama pattern? Imagine a Military in herringbone damascus or some other sweet pattern. I bet even with the priciness this would create there would be a lot of takers!

I've never been too fond of VG10 damascus. While i'm sure it performs very well, I can't get past the way it looks.
