Ok, we use a lot of curly maple..I mean a lot:p Most for hawk and hatchet handles..Well I would like to use it more on knife handles but Im running into a problem with my Aqua fortis reacting badly with the epoxy that soaks into the maple...Aqua fortis(in my opinion) is the best way to show figure in curly woods..What happens is that after the knife handle is completed( sanded down and burnished) well then its time to apply the aqua fortis..Well it seems that some of the epoxy soaks into the maple(perhaps 1/32"- 1/16" deep) and the aqua fortis cannot caramelize the epoxy soaked wood..So what happens is that you have nice brown/red maple with a white line of wood along the glue line:mad:
I was wondering if you stabalize it that maybe the epoxy wont soak in?? Any thoughts?

Have you tried a wood filler to fill the pores in the wood prior to applying the epoxy?

If you spray the surfaces to be glued with a light coat of aerosol lacquer you can create a barrier that will keep the glue from penetrating the wood.
But that would most likely result in a weak glue joint.
Your other option is to have the wood dyed and stabilized.
