Would the Emerson CQC 11 or CQC 13 make a good SD knife?

I'm in the process of picking up a BM afck and I also wanted to add more knives to my collection for SD purposes. These two Emersons have caught my eye and I was wondering what are your opinions on these two models as a SD knife.
1.) Would the blade shape for the CQC 11 be good for SD?
2.) Would a bowie style blade on the CQC 13 make a better SD knife?
3.) I've also attached a picture of the CQC 12 since the blade style is similar to the CQC 13. Which knife would you depend on in a life or death situation? Would you pick the emersons over the spyderco military?
4.) Would I also be able to use the wave feature if I don't clip it to my pocket? If I make sure to rub the roller against the insides of my pocket before pulling it out, would I still be able to wave it?
5.) How are the locking mechanisms on the emersons?
Thanks in advance.

I have the 12 and the 13 and like em both. I really put the 12 through some abuse and it's held up nicely. The 13 hasn't been used. I think that the 13 is an "exellent" design for defense, as I love clip point blades. It has a very secure handle too. The 11 I don't personally care for, but I'm sure it could be used effectively as well. To me, a clip point is second only to a dagger when it comes to sd. If it came down to it, I'd depend on the 12 over the 13 due to it's lock. It costs a little more, but would probably be worth the investment. I just sold a cf Military a couple of weeks ago, but I found no perticular fault in the knife. I will say that I find it's handle to be slightly less secure than any of those Emersons though. I probably would not want to depend on the wave working if you don't use the clip. It might be a little too unpredictable for my prefrence, but still possible. I held off from buying an Emerson for quite a while because I heard the locks weren't the greatest. But, after owning and using quite a few, I have had no problem with any of them. -Another knife to look at would be the chinook2 or 3. Great lock, handle, blade shape, and price.

1)yes
2)probably imho.
3)i prefer the '12 to the '13 the frame lock is lots better imho, i prefer the '12 to a millie for sure.
4)yes
5)they work fine.

i havent ever been nutz about the '11, the '13 is ok but i like the '12 a lot better due to the framelock.

They'll all be just fine for SD purposes. They're all strong knives, with a decent blade length, a reliable opening method, etc.
I'd get the 11, if I were you, for one major reason:
I prefer spearpoints. Any blade shape will be ok for self-defense. If you're going to carry a knife, though, chances are you'll use it for utility purposes exponentially more often than self-defense (well, hopefully anyway...). The spearpoint is one of the oldest and most versatile blade shapes, lending itself extremely well to all types of tasks. And, if you're going to rely upon your knife in an emergency, whether it involves a high-pressure scenario like a car crash, or an armedbassailant, you want to be familiar with your knife to such a degree that using it is instinctive. This type of familiarity with one's tools comes with regular, frequent use; hence, in a pinch you'll be most able to use the tool you use most often — your utility knife (not the one that sits in your pocket "just in case," rarely being used for anything).

So, the long and short of it is this:
All of those knives will work fine for SD, regardless of blade shape.
Get the one you can also use for a utility knife, so you'll be more comfortable to use it under stress.
The best shape for a utility knife is a spearpoint.

YMMV.

I vote the the for 11 too, just a great overall knife design, good balance, fast in the hand, perfect handle ergonomics, optimum blade length and easy to carry for the size.

I edc a 11 or Commander and like the 11 a bit better to tell the truth. I like the recurve and it has a reinforced spear point. I don't know I just like it. I have a ton of other knives but choose these 2 for most times. I also like the MT SOCOM but the one I have is getting to expensive to replace so I don't carry it that often. keepem sharp
