Would this blade grind bother you?

Hey everyone, this will be my first thread so bear with me.

I recently purchased a "John doe" Custom Whitetail knife with green micarta handles and love the knife. The fit and finish is awesome and ergos are surprisingly good for such a small knife. I like it so much I ordered another with cocobolo handles. This is where my question comes in.

Is it normal on a hand forged knife that both sides of the blades are unevenly ground or is this just a lemon? I attached some images below so you can see for yourself. You can see the a heat treatment stops much earlier on the blade compared to the other side. This results in both sides main angle being very uneven, but the secondary bevel seems to be equal as the edge is razor sharp so it doesn't really effect the cutting.

Would this bother you? I'm kind of disappointed considering how perfect the first one was. Also, I don't want to shed a bad light on "John doe" as his knives are gorgeous and very useful and highly recommend them :thumb up: I might just be nit-picking. Interested to hear some feedback. Thanks!!

Aesthetics are a big part of a knife buy....especially on a custom.

What is Humphreys' explanation for it?

Personally, from the pics I wouldn't accept the knife.

I would return that.

However, if you really like the knife and an opportunity to get one like it is not likely to come up in the future, then weigh that into your decision. I'm not familiar with the maker or how limited his work is so I can't pass judgement in that regard.

I would have been on the phone immediately. I wouldn't post what you did unless the maker told me to jump in the lake though. A thread like this would be a last resort. I have seen some nice pieces he did, that ain't one of them. Hope you work it out. Russ

i'm in the same boat as the other posters... don't know about the maker, maybe it's just how things work out and it is the "hand made" look. but personally i would be really disappointed with that blade especially since the rough oil burned parts are so uneven and you can so easily see the difference on both sides.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations, I will be returning.
Also, since I don't know how to delete a thread and I don't want to shed a bad light on "john", I want to reiterate that Lon makes awesome knives as I own others and have seen other. The other knife is my favorite fixed blade.... Hands down. His knives are great deals, especially considering they are hand forged and full custom. There is always the chance for a lemon from any maker so I guess I just got unlucky on this one. If there is a way to delete a thread could someone let me know? Thanks in advance!

I have a couple hand-ground knives that are slightly off, but that one is very noticeable. Typically, I'm not bothered by slight discrepancies in hand finished products, but that knife might make me question the maker.

Have you tried contacting Lon? I think this thread might be bad press for him if he was willing to fix the grind for you. Personally, I would have waited to hear from the man himself before making a public announcement about it.

I had a slight issue with a custom I bought last year, and the maker offered to fix my knife for free. That alone made me live with the minor flaw it had, and I didn't announce it to everyone because mistakes do happen.

I hope you find a solution:thumbup:

Thanks for your feedback! If you don't mind could you please remove the maker's name from your response? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for you response and I'm stupid for using his name! If you don't mind could you please remove the makers name from your response? Thanks in advance.

To delete the thread you go to the bottom of the page after the text box and click 'close this thread'
I was actually on the fence this early morning about one of 'john doe's' knives.
It has been made pretty obvious who it is but I still admire his work. Uneven grinds come with the territory but this one is far from a fluke in my opinion. I would say send it back. As I've perused many of his items on KnafShipfree the charm of them is how each heat treatment and blade differs a bit in shape considering they're hand forged.

I agree in that I would have waited before sending this thread since now I'm on the fence after seeing this. I recently also had some issues with a knife that was delivered but it's always best to explore all options with either the dealer, maker or seller, before posting a thread about the issue. Best of luck

Thanks Tim! I still recommend them as I love the first one I got.

I can't seem to find the "close this thread" at the bottom. All I see is "post quick reply" , "go advanced", and "cancel" as options.

For some reason the only thing under the message box is "show your signature". "Close this thread" isn't an option. I wonder if its because i have a basic membership and your gold? Would it be possible for you to close the thread? If so, it would be greatly appreciated.

Good for you in changing your first message. Most knife makers are responsive to problems with their products.

Go to the top of the thread and look for ADMINISTRATOR TOOLS and select CLOSE THREAD. There may be a stand alone CLOSE THREAD option.

Mike
