Would this knife be legal to carry?

I live in NY state, would not carry it in NYC, but want to make sure I could carry it when I'm mountain biking or hiking around. Nothing over 4 inch blade is the state law but is it the overall length or the blade length? Here are the measurements of the knife I'm looking at.

Overall Length: 5.5 in
Blade Length: 2.65 in

It would be legal carry even in NYC if the blade isn't lockable. I think it should be ok in the rest of the state with the locking blade and that size.

it's a fixed blade at those measurements, but when they say nothing over 4 inch blade,is it the overall length or just the blade length?

Keep in mind that, while it may be technically legal, if it's some black thing with all kind of scary pointy bits sticking out of it, and something like "Death Merchant 3000" stencilled on the blade, it may still get you trouble from law enforcement.

i see your point. the knife i was looking at is the bark river little creek.

New York state has no length laws. I have read the entire penal code. Only NYC has the less than 4" blade length law.

However, they throw in the little phrase "dangerous knife" in there. So who knows for sure?

I've lived in NYC and upstate, granted before the current anti-knife era. Upstate, especially engaged in outdoor activities, accepts knives as legitimate equipment.

I currently live in Upstate NY, and you'll be fine with that. You could actually go with a larger knife even, most people, cops included, do not care if you have a knife here.

i visit a friend once in a while upstate which is good to know, but how about long island?? are they as lenient as upstate? i never paid much attention because i just recently started getting into knives.

also looking at the bark river bravo 1. it's over 4 inches but another nice knife, but not sure if i would get into trouble.

Long Island is better than NYC BUT Nassau has many former NYC officers and Suffolk some too. They were all trained in the NYC way of enfocing the NY STATE law, and one of my son's teen age friends was threated with arrest for a flickable knife ( the officer took it), and I saw an teen arrested at Broadway Mall ( Nassau) for a "gravity knife" with no other charge. In NY it is best to have a non flickable knife that is not weapon like by design. The term "dangerous knife" is tied to intent of use. If you state you're carry it for a weapon ( including self defense) then it becomes a dangerous knife. A knife with a tanto blade or dagger blade may also be considered a dangerous knife. Finally anything carried with the design of a weapon will get you arrested by state law if the officer feels so inclined. You may never have an issue, but you never know. It is best to error on the side of following the law, especially in today's world where an arrest will follow you around forever ( no matter what happens in court), and even stops by police often get your name in a data base that is out there for some to see. The NYPD has been sued for this, but they still do it for now....My final comment is to keep your knife out if sight anywhere in NYS. NYC law requires this, but anywhere in NYS this can be a great help if you are charged with a illegal knife. Most weapons charges are dropped due to the officer not being able to properly explian why he search you in the first place. If your knife is clearly visible ( clip or belt sheath) then the officer can ask to see if it is legal with you have no Forth Amenedment rights .....
