Recommendation? Would this propane forge work well for heat treating?

I am just starting to make knives and I have come to the point where I would want to be able to heat treat knives at home without having to make a charcoal fire every time.

I was wondering if this propane forge would be adequate enough for heat treating.

I just don't have enough money nor want to buy an expensive heat treat oven for a hobby I'm just starting. If you have a better suggestion for somewhere near that price please tell me!

Thanks!

No. There are too many problems with that design. Hose clamp fittings on the gas line. Straight burner entry rather than tangential. Unlined wool without refractory. Gaping open ends.

For a forge in that size and price range you're better served looking at an Atlas. http://www.atlasknife.com/product/budget-forge/ Note how the gas line is swaged connectors, it comes with refractory for the lining, and the burner is set at an angle tangent to the chamber.

Thanks! The Atlas one looks like it would work great. I will end up buying that one if I don't end up finding something else somehow.

Add a couple fire bricks to control the opening sizes and you'll be heat treating 1084 no problem.

Second the atlas mini. It's a beast. you'll likely still use it even if you upgrade to a bigger forge down the road.

+1 for the atlas, I have never used one but hear thy are great. You can also build one for rather cheep.

I haven't used an atlas so I can't comment on them.
But it's easy enough to build forge with a blown burner for under $100

I also like fire...

But again, while i havnt used an atlas yet the design is a good one, the maker is a participant on the forums and is always tweaking and improving his design. If i hadnt built one an atlas would be my first choice if i was on any sort of budget.

I have an Atlas Mini and can't say enough good about them.
