Just curious as to the general feelings of collectors about buying USED Official Military Issued knives (particularly from ebay). TIA

I found the listing, hoping that it was a DET-1 SMF.

The NSN stamped SMF's come up for sale every once in a while. I don't think it's a collector's item, per se.

I find the NSN to be an awesome addition to a knife. It gives the knife character, and gives it a knife a story behind it. What sounds better, it was made... then sent to me, or the knife was made, sent into combat, and made it back and into my hands?

Ebay/egay is a great place for the unsuspecting to get suckered into paying premiums.

None of those are worth asking price imo. That one for 475 OBO with the rust spots was funny.

Maybee if it was real cheap from a friend that it was issued to. Otherwise I see it as stealing from the gov.
I was thinking along the same line, hence the thread.

I'll stay away from eBay, thanks everyone! Have a great one!

I purchase my knives to collect and to carry.

Every single one of my knives gets carried at some point, no safe queens here.

I have no purpose for a collectors Strider when I can use those funds to purchase something I can carry.

Recently picked up a Strider SnG, so one Strider is enough for now lol.

I'm going to pick up a few other blades before thinking about another Strider.

If it's got an NSN, it's .Gov property, although it's likely classed as a durable expendable. The hand receipt holder is responsible to turn it in, or he has to pay for it. Sometimes they are written off as a combat loss, which suggests that the knife in question was picked up by ?? It's not likely this came thru DRMO, I would think a property book officer would have jumped on it as excess or surplus before it even left post.

So, it's ethically questionable how it could be on the market - again, it's .Gov property. Not a free handout. Secondly, who says it's authentic? The NSN is public knowledge, pics are everywhere, the font is known, how the blade was marked is open content, tell me it's authentic - which leads directly to an investigation. See comment #1.

Nonetheless, sure, it could be, the smart guys buy when they are at their least popular and the prices are cheapest. The problem today in this market is any knife that can be cheaply altered could be represented as one.

Hey, they fake up Randalls now. For all that, tell me someone hasn't bench assembled one of 50 sourced from China. Just scotchbrite the highlights for patina, soak them in brine, voila, Det 1 collectible. Just sell them one at a time spread out over different places.

Hmm. Maybe I've let on too much . . . no, it's not me. Lot of good that will do now. ;)

Some issue items do not have to be returned and are not issued with a hand receipt. It just depends upon the item.

Of course it's authentic! It's on the internets. In fact, an NSN not only guarantees authenticity, it guarantees that a knife has been used in combat by top secret operators to kill terrorists. And zombies.

True story bro.

I wonder if you can find the knife that helped take out Bin Laden on ebay too?...

The NSN SMF:
The Strider MARSOC SMF is a framelock folding knife that was specifically developed for Detachment 1, the first SOCOM unit of the United States Marine Corps. The Strider SMF was the first knife issued to an individual Marine Corps unit in over 60 years and the first tactical folder issued within the USMC.[1]
The National Stock Number (NSN) for the SMF knife is 1095-01-531-5015.[4]
The latest version of this knife (generation 2 and above) includes the Hinderer Lockbar Stabilizer, a mechanism designed by custom knifemaker Rick Hinderer and licensed for use by Strider.[4] The lockbar stabilizer is a metal disc contained in the titanium lockbar which is designed to preserve the life of the framelock by preventing overtravel and flex.[4] The original knives designed for the Marines' SOCOM unit in 2003 do not include this feature, but subsequent versions do.[4]
The initial run of this model consisted of 300 knives.[4] 150 for the men in the unit and 150 similarly marked knives for collectors whose purchase offset the cost of the knives for the military.[4][8] The Marine version features a Coyote Brown colored G-10 scale and backspacer, whereas the Civilian version's scale and backspacer is made of black G-10. The Civilian version also lacks the Marine Raider Insignia which is stamped on the blade of the Marine version.[2] Thanks to Wikipedia.
I paid $500 for my black one. It is 100%. I've owned many SMF's and many Striders in general. This is by far my favorite.
I would suspect that Strider is very proud of this folder, and rightfully so. I know that I am...

That sounds like the Det1 version, not the standard NSN version.

I wouldn't buy that knife or a CRK or a Hinderer from the the auction site. I've seen some really good fakes. If you want a collectible Strider get a custom or starlingear.

Yes, Dano, you are right. It is the Det1 version and I have listed the NSN which is found on the blade.
Sonny
P.S. I'll get some pictures up shortly.
