If you could buy a mini survival chest rig stocked with generic survival gear basics, or a mini survival chest rig stocked with mid to high name brand survival basics, would you? which one and why?

Well, no.

Only because I pretty much have all the kit pieces.

The rig itself? Yes.
I'm looking hard at the Tactical Tailor 2-piece MAV with an X-Harness as the base.
I have most of my stuff "pouch-ified", and I'd probably just hang them from the rig.

The problem with a pre-made kit is, if you make it at a price point that people will buy it, they'll bitch about the quality of the items. If you make it with good items (not necessarily top of the line), they'll bitch about the price.

But, good luck.

Me - no. While I find the chest rig concept appealing, I wouldn't purchase a rig that is already set up. Where is the fun in that? :) I would rather assemble my own rig and kit. Not only would I be able to configure the chest rig however I desired (pouches, harness system, and contents), but it would probably be less expensive than if someone did all of that for me.

Now, if a place sold modular chest rigs that could be purchased in a variety of different configurations, plus they offered varying stages of minikits (fishing, utility, fire, etc.), then I might give that a look. But that's a lot to ask from a merchant, I think.

It's a good idea.

Simply order the rig, the pouches, and the kits (places like Knives Ship Free have good premade fire kits and such, so why not?), and you order the ones you want, they pack it in a box, and you assemble it at your home. Actually, I think that would be easier than someone assembling the whole kit beforehand. Plus you get familiar with it putting it together and placing the pieces where you want.

Hell, it really is like playing with Legos.

I think stuff like that was popular among a certain crowd during the Y2K crisis. People who were not really interested in doing the work for themselves or having the knowledge. Instead, they focused on wigging out and buying pallets of MRE's and pre-made survival kits of dubious quality. Every off the shelf kit I have ever bought was a base for what I wanted to put in a larger kit. It might appeal to some law enforcement circles, where they see themselves as needing the gear per se, but again have no interest in putting in the time to research and learn. That is pure speculation though.

I have too much fun tweaking my own kits and searching for the right components, so I would probably take the inventory list of what is in the pre-made kit and use it as a reference...think AMK for example...

maybe ,if it came with maybe basic items and still had room to add your own stuff. everybody likes to add or take away want they like or dont like and if cost is a factor I dont want to pay for items not used.
just simple items like , waterproof matches, chem light stick, basic FAK,small fishing kit, ferro rod. no knife or junk items..need plenty of room to add our own gear. just my opinion....

Nearly a blanket no from me.

I can accommodate everything I need in more comfort by other means. What I believe to be a useful survival collection for me often has scant similarity to what I see others tote. There's sometimes a bit of overlap in the first aid department but little more.

I think I could be swayed if someone were to develop a good maritime one. PLBs are still illegal to use on mainland UK but you can have them at sea. If the rig hooked to a good buoyancy aid and had a great set up with PLB, flare, throw line, torch, Spyderco X salt, whistle, heliograph, and so on then maybe. It would have to come as a bundle much cheaper than I would have to pay assembling the components separately otherwise there is no motivation. I like cherry picking kit that I know works for me. To forfeit that the rig would have to have some odd properties that I couldn't arrive at independently. If it was just collection of off the shelf stuff it'd need to be approaching half price to overcome my apathy.

They aren't chest rigs, but I have some modular kits on the way. It's actually a pretty cool system. I'll share more when I have a more definite delivery date.

Looking forward to it. I like most premade kits, because they usually have a bunch of fairly good pieces all together, then I add to it and personalize for my needs/wants.
