Would you consider it a flaw or defect if

a new knife does not a a sharp point when you receive it? The tip of the knife is not broken off and the point is still intact. The edge is razor sharp. It is just the knife point is not pointedly sharp, i.e. the tip is rounded off a very tiny bit to the extend that it is noticeable. I apologize if the wording is confusing. This may be a stupid question as I am new into knives.

"The only stupid question is the one you don't ask." :D

A rounded tip may depend on the knife. Some just don't come very pointy. Or it may be a second-hand knife in very good shape that someone accidently rounded through an error in sharpening.

The Spyderco Sharpmaker is a very good system for beginners but if you're not careful, you will round the tip.

One way to corret this, again depending on the knife and the geometry of the tip, is to bring the back of the blade down slightly at the tip and resharpen it manually from there.

I had the opposite: Tip had a sight recurve on it. I wouldn't consider it a defect. Something like that is bound to happen in use anyway and is easily remedied with a short time on a stone.

if the style of blade is not supposed to be rounded, i'd indeed consider it a defect... the point of my knife is very important for many cutting tasks... it's often required for penetration to begin a delicate cut.

As said above, some knives just don't come with a sharp point. Whether or not I would consider it a defect would depend on just how rounded it was.

This is a common problem with MANY knifemakers production and custom.
Many times you don't get a sharp edge or tip.

Read up on sharpening in the faq's and practice.
You'll need to know how to sharpen anyway. I still need to hone my skills. haha

My Case wharncliff came with the tip not fully ground and dull. U could put the tip on your fingertip and not pierce the skin!! Had to use a DMT aligner kit to grind it down until I get the wharncliff that it was suppose to be. I think that they all came like that to aviod lawsuits " I stabbed my hand because I thought only spear points are suppose to pierce the skin!!!!!"

The Kershaw Mini Task came with the perfect wharncliff point that i have.

So how does one use the Sharpmaker to put the point back on? Simply turn the knife over and run the back of it down the stone until the point returns? This sounds like a slow process to me.

I have modified the way I sharpen on my Sharpmaker since. Rather than running the point right past the stone, ie across and out the other side, when I reach the point I just drag it down the stone.

Cheers, Acolyte.

There is a recent thread on fixing rounded tips.
For a dull tip I'd use a coarse stone to take off some steel then a fine then sharpmaker and strop.
