Would You Consider This a Defect?

Hi Guys,

I am new to the knife world and recently purchased an Espada medium G10. We do not have any knife stores near me, so one of the down sides is I have to purchase online. When I received this item in the mail yesterday, I was very excited, but upon opening the packaging and inspecting the knife, I found what I would consider a small defect. There is a dimple at the rear of the blade that is very noticeable in the closed position and as the blade is being deployed. It is not noticeable in the open position. I want to send it back for a blade replacement and I sent Cold Steel CS a photo, but on the phone they told me they have to see the knife to determine whether it actually is a warranty issue. I guess I just want to know whether this is something you guys would just accept as is, or can I expect more of this kind of anomaly from Cold Steel products. I was also surprised to see the blade arrive in a stone wash finish. Everything I saw online seemed to indicate the G10 version was bead blasted? That doesn't matter to me. I actually prefer the stonewash and find it very nicely executed. I really love the knife other than the dimple, which hits a nerve because the knife is otherwise perfect in m eyes.

Regards,

Donovan

Crap, not sure why pic is not working... here's a direct link to it. https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/104624874125622839924/albums/6113140083731472289/6113140085812082818?pid=6113140085812082818&oid=104624874125622839924&authkey=CPnlqq_FzargrQE[/URL]

The blades were upgraded to stone-washed finish over the past year. It is much better than the previous bead-blasted finish, which only caused lots of rust and corrosion problems for lots of folks. There were lots of complaints about that on all of the various knife forums over the past several years.

I have had several Cold Steel folders with minor cosmetic blemishes, but since they are knives to carry and use, that doesn't bother me at all.

If that dimple is only exposed in the closed position, it shouldn't really be a problem for you. You just have to get used to it.

I haven't seen anything that obvious on any of the many CS knives I've owned. At worst, I've seen instances where there might be a small radius on one side of the tang, while the other was square or something similar. I wouldn't personally have a problem with that knife, as long as function was not impaired in any way; however, if it really bugs you, there's no reason not to send it in and have them look at it. I haven't had occasion to make use of CS's warranty thus far, but by all accounts they seem very reasonable and accommodating.:cool:

I prefer to shop online. It's much cheaper.
If you are thinking about reselling or trading, I would definitely send it back. Older bead-blasted blades in Aus 8 are going to get really tough to resell/trade when the new ones are released. If you are going to keep it, and use it, who cares about a dimple? I haven't had any trouble with rust. I wipe down the knives I use at the end of the day.
I am looking for the Rajah2 in stonewash, online. I haven't been able to find one for under $100.

Thanks for the perspectives, guys. I have decided to keep the knife. If anything, it will help me train myself not to be so anal about tiny details and get used to what may be accepted or expected once in a while at the $50-$60 price point. As I mentioned, I love the knife, other than the dimple. It will be interesting to see if it does become a point of unique character, in a positive way, for me. Since I really admired the thick clip point blade and heavy, rock solid construction boasted by virtually every online source, the knife was purchased as more of a novelty or a conversation piece than an EDC, so I might have to put it through some actual use to where the dimple blends in with other wear. Right now it stands out like a sore thumb in contrast with the rest of the beautiful stonewash finish.
