Would you donate your organs?

I am an organ donor. They will be able to keep someone alive since I will no longer be needing them. Where I'm going, I'll have a new body and have no use for this one once I leave it. Closed or open casket won't matter. They can even use parts of your eyes to help the blind see. Imagine this, what if I donated and they used my eyes so that a blind knife enthusiast could see timascus, damascus, mammoth ivory, etc. ;) :)

No.

I have no religious beliefs. I just don't like the thought of my body being vandalised after death.

I have kept myself in good health. I have never smoked, I exercise regularly, I eat a healthy diet etc. If I were to be hit by a bus, why should some obese, chain-smoking alcoholic get a second chance at my expense?

Finally, I remember reading about what is known in transplant circles as the "Weekend Syndrome." Patients needing organ replacements tend to cheer up at weekends. Why? More people out driving = more car crashes = more organs available...

Self-centered or not, these are my thoughts.

I have to agree with Maximus Otter on this one.

I do not like the idea of being butchered for spare parts.

We all have the responsibility to look after ourselves.

We should take responsibility and eat well, take some exercise, get fresh air and avoid abusing our bodies, which are not designed to last forever, but will respond to good care and maintenance.

I think smokers and drinkers should be denied treatment until they give up.

Then I think it is more acceptable to use my taxes to treat them.

The need for an organ transplant does not always come from self-abusive behavior.

I, myself, simply could not live with myself if I hadn't agreed to be an organ donor. It seems utterly selfish to me to no be willing to do that.

I haven't decided either. I sure as heck won't need them, and they aren't doing any good to anyone just rotting away in the ground. Still, I'm not convinced anyone else deserved them either. Mostly, I just don't like to think about it.

I think people should be able to auction away the "rights" to their parts on a boby bank eBay. If I'm improving the quality of someone elses' life by dying, then it seems fair that the organ recipient could toss me a few bucks to improve the quality of my life before I croak. Who knows, I might spend the money on a sports car and accellerate the donation process...

Yes, it is very very very narrowminded to assume all organ recipients are self-abusive. I live with one who is not.

That said, here's a question - if you could have a say in who gets your organs - for example you could specify which diseases your organs would be used to treat - would that change your mind?

I am... sometimes... and I'm not sometimes... Everytime I get a new license I usually switch.. I ride motorcycles... ALOT just got my first CAR/TRUCK last year. Have 6 Motorcycles. So most people call riders "Organ Donors" anyway.... It's my not so big sticking it to the man!!! to them by not putting that sticker on my license. Know what I mean???

I also am of the belief that there are some out there that I can help. Or could help. If I could donate something like part of a liver to help someone while I'm alive I'd be more inclined in a way.

But I look at $ signs. I'll explain....

I'm riding a motorcycle... Stop at a stop light.... Get rear ended by some dumb guy in a cage.... get messed up pretty badly but MAY live through it all with minimal residual issues.... So 2 weeks later a "miracle" happens and I'm good to go. ( I do heal quickly ) I think everyone here can follow. Anyway so I have some massive bills to pay.... Treatment, ER, Ambulance ride... lets say... 100K in bills.

Now lets get me back to the stop light.... and get hit... get messed up same way... They look at me and say... Hey we can SELL HIM!!!!! Pull that kidney, he don't need that heart, how about that eyeball.... Oh I just love grey eyes!!! Nope don't look like he's gonna pull out of it the docs say... THANX FOR THE CHANCE!!!!!

Okay so now they pulled em all... hmmmmm how much they sell for??? Lets see Kidney 50K.... OH but we have to install it.... that will be another 200K PLUS follow ups... hmmm another 75K over 5 years... Now where's that retina I stole.... I MEAN that that guy.... what was his name??? Oh it don't matter.... that guy "DONATED" where'd I leave it??? Hmmmm wonder what these go for??? I think....25K... Sounds good.. BUT WAIT!!!! Gotta install it properly... 75K Please.... Don't forget the follow ups the anti biotics, the blah blah blah blah stuff that goes along with it...

Lets see... which is more profitable??? hmmmmm Better yet.... Who exactly has to pay for my funeral??? Has to cover MY bills I left??? OH YEAH!!!! My family has to pick up the tab for me now eh??? Wonder how much of the money from my organs they would see???? Nah... I'll keep mine thanks though!!!!

Wanna see something creepy.... Go to a hospital and sit outside with a counter and ask how many of the doctors and nurses that come in during the day are organ donors.... Then ask to see the back of their license or their donor card to verify it..... That should give you an idea.

Sorry for the morbidity.... but anymore I feel this world is less to do with LIVING and more about $$$$$.

Oh and to address your question Dr. G.... Yeah it would help if I or my Family had a say in who received what. Basically if my brother looked at me and said "he's toast and he ain't gonna make it" then it'd be a bit better..... I SEE NO REASON why someone over 50 years old should be allowed a transplant when someone 20 years old is in line. Sorry bout it, but which would really make sense???? And if the 50 year old would not step aside and let the 20 year old have the organ.... then why even donate it??? Because that in itself is being selfish about things. Wouldn't you want the person who could benefit the MOST out of your organs to get them???? Not just the person who cold benefit the HOSPITAL/DOCTORS the most. And with me it'd be a no brainer really if it was a family member that needed something.... Like if (I don't have kids or wife or anything so its hypothetical) IF we were on a family outing and something happened and my kids got hurt and I could save them by using one of my organs... then yeah no worries....

Or like Bob W said.... let my family sell the parts....

Hi All-

My inclination is to donate them as long as they can sew me back together to look nice and presentable in a casket before I head for cremation.

DevilMan, as a bigtime (and long-term) motorcycle enthusiast myself, I see your concerns. The good news is that the medical teams trying to save your life and the organ harvesting doctors are entirely separate teams. They will never have that conundrum of letting you slip away towards death in order to harvest organs. The doctors charged with saving your life might not even be advised you are an organ donor in the first place. Hospitals treat those kind of ethical situations very seriously.

Thanx for the info Blue Jays... It's a tad bit more comforting.... But I still gotta wonder.. Know what I mean?

Thanx just the same though for some light on this subject.

Not to me. But if I could meet the recipient and see a background check, that would make a difference.

Huh... just checked my wallet. I am an organ doner. Or at least I think that's what the red heart means. I must've done that when I got the "W" motorcycle endorsement....

I don't know if they would want my organs, I don't mind giving up my organs after death, but I am not an organ donor on my drivers license.

Yes, I am an organ donor!! I want to be able to help someone out when I am gone. I woon't be needing my body anymore, so I am for them taking and using whatever they can to help someone who needs it out!!

No. I have no control as to whom they would go to. What if it was someone I would despise if I met them?

No.

I have no religious beliefs. I just don't like the thought of my body being vandalised after death.

Hi Maximus, I don't think anyone likes that idea. But I'm an organ donor because I have a friend who is a mortician and he explained the embalming process to me. I will spare you all the knowledge, but suffice it to say that your organs will be vandalized more if you do not donate them. At least your guts will be useful to somebody when you pass on. I think if you're cremated then your guts will be spared indignity, though.

Hey moon, not to argue but you can opt to not be embalmed... and I am pretty sure that in cremation, you are put on a slab slid into a furnace burned, ashes shoveled up and put in a coffee can, and your bones pulled to the side and ground up into powder then added to the mix.

I could verify it as one of my classmates family's run a funeral home back home. Don't think they do cremation though.

I personally and go for Plastination.

If my passing away can somehow save anothers life I can't think of a reason I wouldn't donate my organs. It is important to let your loved ones know your wishes either way, the indicators on your licence are good but tell them anyway.

Would you donate your organs after death? Why or why not? -Just curious. I can't decide.

Why, which ones do you want?

As far as I'm concerned, you can have anything you want. My heart isn't much good. (6 way bypass) My eyes? I don't think so. (Cataracts) Liver? Maybe. Kidneys. Yeah, they still work. :D
