would you ever need more than 2?

First I want to thank everyone on this forum. I have learned a great deal from you guys, and that is saying a lot being that I have been an avid hunter and fisherman my whole 29 years of life.

Question is: would you ever need more than two essential knives if you had to survive? I know that one good one would be sufficient, but just as easy to carry would be one fixed and a folder in your pocket.

I just got a Benchmade RSK1 and have a Camp Tramp on the way. I can't see much that these two combined couldn't get done almost everything I could want to. Of course these are just two new ones to replace the many similar ones I have carried in the past.

what do you carry when you go hunting or fishing or camping out?

How about a SAK or multitool? A small neck knife, like a Bitteroot, for fine work?

And Valdris, The Chosen Blade of the Mithrodin, in case the aliens attack!

Sorry, I got carried away ... :(

You have chosen 2 nice knives, ideal combo for hunting and fishing.
You could always throw in a good filleting knife, a skinning knife, something with a touch more point for removing splinters, whittling etc and a multi purpose tool ( leatherman ). You would also require a back up for RSK and one for the CT just in case one is lost or breaks.
You might also consider a larger bag to carry all these additional knives. :D
Welcome aboard !!!

Nice choices.

I tend to carry a SERE 2K or Ka-Bar Mule, and a Busse SFNO, Mission MPK12S, or Swamp Rat Ratweiler.

When I went camping in my younger days my usual carry was a 5 inch fixed blade on my belt, a SAK in one pocket and a stockman in another, someone in the group would take a machete or some other good chopper. We did not have the so called tacticals in those days but I think I could go today just fine with my old ones, A Leatherman type multitool would have been nice to have.

I agree, good choices. I generally go with a Dozier Professional Trail Guide and a Spyderco Military, and feel I'm being well served. But there are more great choices out there these days than ever.

I routinely EDC an SAK and a locking folder. It always turns out on days when I don't have my SAK, I wish I did.

When I camp/hike, this is what I bring/carry:

1) A HI Khukuri 18" Chitlangi
2) A Buck Carson U2/Tanto point
3) A Leatherman Wave in the utility pouch
4) A Benchmade 710
5) A Swiss Army Climber

If I have to limit it more than that, I would carry the Khuk, the Leatherman and the Benchmade 710. I like the steel in the 710 better than the SAK steel, and the Leatherman serves many of the same purposes. I have not gone backpacking in a long time, but this is what I carried last time. It was a 3 day hike into Spider Meadows in WA state. 18 miles +/- each way.

I notice that the general attitude is "You can never have too many knives! WTF are you talking about!?!?"

My kind of people!!! :D

When I'm camping or hiking, I strap my Camillus PSK to my leg. Works good for pounding stakes, and the saw on the back edge is decent enough for any light sawing that needs to be done.

I don't like serrated edges, but I'm looking to get a small folder with a serrated edge for cutting rope and stuff like that. Not that the pilot suvival knife doesn't do the trick, but sometimes the five inches of blade just gets in the way.

Any suggestions would be welcome.. .my price range is usually under $200 (anything more and I'm scared to use it in fear of damaging it).

Great choices, IMHO a SAK is the first EDC that should occupy the pocket of every man, woman, and child. Damnit I sound like a dirty politician, ack!

I would imagine some modern day representation of the Nessmuk trio would be best.

With a Ritter Grip and CT, you are not lacking in the cutting department in the woods. If you were going to have to cut lots and lots of wood, and axe or saw would be helpful. I would not feel under knifed at all with both of those, as a matter of fact, I think you hit on a very good backwoods combo.

I agree - I reckon that's a fine combo. I'd have something small with lots of gadgets like a SAK allong as well - for splinters, personal grooming (hey you never know when you are going to stumble across the swedish bikini team :D ) and foot care.

bikini team..... well, I guess I didnt' specify for the woods or the beach did I.

I do carry a leatherman type multitool (I think it's from Bear Mfg Co) in a hip pouch along with a mini mag light that I have put led lights in.
