When I re-patterned the smaller sheath I make for the Hiking Buddy / Kephart / Bushboot I decided to film the process and take notes. The first video is about 1 hour long and I wager the second video will be a bit shorter. The first video takes the process from when the sheath blank is cut out to the point where holes are made for stitching. The second video takes off from there to final finishing. I am narrating the video's as well with as many tips and tricks as I can pack in there.

Here is what I propose:

I want to take five people on as "apprentices" at whatever level they are at when we start and show you the ropes as much as I can. All I ask is that you see the process through in a reasonable amount of time - say - two months from when we start. It will take some money outlay to purchase a few tools (I will give you a full list of what I used and tell you where and how you can cut out any of these tools you can save your money on) and it will take a little time - but I don't think more than 4 or 5 hours total to get the sheath done. The reality is that you will spend more on the first sheath you will make over simply ordering one from me or any of the other great leather benders on this forum. BUT, if you buy a few tools and a shoulder of leather - you should be able to make 4 or 5 sheaths with the supplies you buy - and have the ability to make more whenever you get the itch to buy another sheath from Andy. It is more of a 'teach a man to fish' rather than 'give a man a fish' situation here.

Of course as many people can follow this but I want to answer all questions publicly of the first five people that sign up.

Here is the sheath I will be making in the video:

I will provide a basic pattern with additions as to how to modify it to your needs. You should be able to make a drop loop type sheath, a belt type sheath, or a drop loop and dangler type sheath as you would like to.

So - who is in? Who can commit to a little time and wants to learn the basics of leather sheath making with me?

Hey Tal.

Vance - I have a few more things on my list than what is shown - but I don't know what you will want. There is a sale at Tandy right now until the end of the year - so let me get a list together of what is needed and we can go from there.

As far as the work bench goes - if you have a kitchen table - and a cutting mat - I think you will be fine!

Please consider me for this opportunity. I've never made a sheath before, but I recently received a single shoulder of quality leather from my wife for our 3rd (leather) anniversary as she knows I'm interested in learning.

I've started to gather the necessary tools and I just happen to have a couple Fiddleback's in need of sheaths. I'm eager to learn and assure you I will put in the required work.

Cheers,
David

as luck would have it...i do have a kitchen table but not sure what a cutting mat is...but there is prolly one here

Hey Tal,

I'd love to get in on this. I'm a big fan of your tutorial and I'd like the opportunity to really dig through that thing.

Tal, I would love to be in on this. I've been looking through your guide and thinking I need to give it a shot. However I have probably 0 tools that would be on your list so I'm wondering a guesstimate on the initial outlay.

Okay I think we have enough. I will post up the tools used and initial outlay and you all can decide.

Another thought was this. I can make a thread and all users that use the thread (I will keep up on it) can decide to donate a little money to the cause. Just for my time and the like.

No pressure - no worries - but much over fiver people gets time consuming I am sure.

Let me post tools and whomever wants in - post up.

Thanks.

TF.

Wow this is an awesome opportunity! I just recently told my girlfriend I wanted to try making my own sheaths but have no no clue what I'm doing. Unfortunately I'm too late for the initial group. It will be exciting to see the progress. This is outstanding!!
