Hello, I've been looking for a knife sharpener that is a little easier than free hand. Im not the best at sharpening, so i want something that is not very hard to use. So would you reccomend a Sharpmaker for me?
Thanks for any help, Matt :)

It's a pretty good system for maintaining a sharp edge on a blade that is already profiled to match one of the preset angles -- 30 or 40 degrees. You still need to know the basics of how to sharpen, basically, how to raise and remove a burr.

If your edge doesn't match the preset angles, you'll have to reprofile the edge so that they match. That process can take quite a while with the stones the set comes with. You can add diamond rods, but then the cost starts to rise quickly.

The new Ken Onion Work Sharp is about to go on sale, so the old Work Sharp models will likely be appearing for sale soon at low prices. It's a small, portable power system that is fast and easy to use.

I recommend the Sharpmaker, but I don't know how much that means. I know next to nothing about sharpening knives. Everything I know about sharpening has come from watching Rambo, reading on the Internet and watching the video that came with the Sharpmaker. I purchased the diamond and ultra fine rods for mine, and I can get all of my knives sharp enough to cut newspaper easily. Some will shave, but not well. Once things click, and I figure out what I'm doing, I have no doubts I'll be able to get them where I want them.

As Twindog said, it's an excellent system for maintaining an already sharp knife, if the edge is set at either 15 or 20 degrees. IME, the Lansky Crock Sticks are as good or even better. I keep Crock Sticks set up on my bench. All of my blades have been re-bevelled to 15 or 20 degrees on an Edge-Pro, so the Sticks are an excellent "touch up."

But in my experience, both of these are "maintainers" not really sharpeners.

I used the sharpmaker, now I freehand. it's a great and easy system, plus it's very affordable. Plenty of YT videos on how to use and get a hair popping/ somewhat polished edge. I sent you a PM
