Would you reccommend a Spyderco Sharpmaker?

Dad has a 75 dollar gift card burning a hole in his pocket and is considering one.

EDIT: He can also get a coarse and a fine DMT benchstones for the same price, would those be better?

I would pick a cheap coarse SIC stone to reprofile and then get a sharpmaker for microbevels and regular maintenance, best bang for your bucks imo.
 
Yes.
I have a double sided Small DMT Coarse and fine. And the Sharpmaker. It is all you need. The Double DMT whish is 1 inch wide and 6 inches long was 18$ and the SM was 50$. That with my Stropman strop and I am good to go.
