Hey guys, I was wondering if you would recommend this knife for edc for activities like scouting, and crusin through the woods.

More specifically the scout model.

If $20 is your limit, look at the Ka Bar Dozier folder.

The Cabella's website doesn't say where those knives are made, but they remind me of cheap imports.

If your heart is set on a knife that says "Cabella's," their Folding Lockback Knives are more attractive, at least to me.

I think you can do better for the money. The BuckLite ($20-ish) is a nice knife, and I've been pleased with my Gerbers ($20 - $30). Opinel ($8 - $12) has always been my first choice for an outdoor knife, and they're about half the price of the Cabella's 'Scout' knife.

I don't think Boy Scouts are allowed to wear sheath knives. Otherwise I'd recommend the AG Russell Woodswalker ($20) or similar.

I do have a very limited budget. Although I am a diagnosed semi-knife addict.

I already have a buck 110, a gerber ez out, and the vixtorinox trekker, spartan, and soldier models. I just figured that another knife couldn't hurt. Maybe I'll just save my money then. :D

The official policy of the Boy Scout of America is that carrying or using "large" fixed-blade knives is "discouraged." By clear negative inferrence, this means that use of non-"large" fixed-blade knives is allowed.

Individual Troops and Councils have adopted outright bans, which they ignore by selling official BSA Chef's Kits, which contain fixed-blade paring and butcher knives and by allowing Scouts to use such knives.

Also, by National BSA policy, no Scout can carry any knife until he earns his Tot'N'Chip which requires that he demonstrate how to carry and pass a fixed-blade knife.

Ignorance in the saddle is ignorance still.

Troops can set policies on knife limits. I carried fixed blades in scouts.

BTW, that knife is the same as a certain Winchester knife. It is crap. Use your Buck 110.

Hey Guys...

"I don't think Boy Scouts are allowed to wear sheath knives. Otherwise I'd recommend the AG Russell Woodswalker ($20) or similar."

I'am a Troop leader here in Canada, and I encourage my scouts to carry fixed blades...

Wonder who the doorknob was that came up with that policy...??!!

Like a locking folder is safer...

Man you should see the stuff I wear to Scouts.. When we are out in the woods,, the gloves come off and anything goes...Shoulder rigs and a Battle Mistress are Not uncommon...

My son is in scouts with me,,and I let him carry anything I have within reason... As long as he has his permits with him,, he's good to go...

This policy kind of reminds me of the "No weapons in church" rule.. Weapons? What weapons?,,none of my boys carry weapons,, they carry tools!

The next time someoe tries pulling that on me,, I'm going to show up at church with a full blown tool belt! :)

Oh,, and to stay On topic,, go with a Swiss Army Knife or the buck 110

Looks like a POS. Like Eddie Bauer knives. Well-known companies putting their names on inferior subcontracted products that are the suckage.

Stick with your Buck or maybe a Spyderco Delica or Endura.

I cant imagine why you would need anything like that when you have a Buck 110. Unless you are worried of wrecking it. I wouldnt. the Buck is way stronger and solid. Just dont throw it ;)

I would never buy any knife from cabelas, they just spend too much money on advertizing and such to offer any kind of good deals.

The precision crafted (by children in Indonesia) 420-stainless-steel blade takes an edge quickly and stays razor sharp throughout all your skinning and cutting chores. (if you dont have many things to do, or if you constantly resharpen) With their tough construction and classic styles, they're sure to be your favorite knife for everything in the outdoors :D :D

seriously, though this is the knife you should get:

Yes, save you money for a while and get a Howling Rat, it is worth every penny! And it is as easy to carry as a folder, you can just stick it in you pocket.

kershaw vapor is a very good, inexpensive, fairly hard-use folder, comes in small and large sizes. Serch the net to find one for around $20. The Kabar Dozier is also very good, better steel, but limited to a 3" blade size and the zytel scales don't make the knife as durable as kershaw's steel frame-lock.

I carry a Vapor II everyday. I've got many more expensive, higher end knives, but I really like it. The frame lock is as solid as anything and I still haven't been able to make it fail (and I've made some high end liner locks fail... so I've tried). It's a very heavy, well balanced knife. The blade steel is good (AUS6A) and keeps an edge fairly well. The shaving sharp factory edge doesn't last long, but after a little reprofiling I've managed to keep it razor sharp. The factory washers are crap, so replace those. Mine has a little front to back blade play, but nothing serious and no side to side play. I put a little Loctite in the pivot and handle screws just because they losen a little with hard use (all knives do) and I've really abused this knife and it's still going strong.

I don't like the little one (three inch blade, as opposed to 3.5 in the Vapor II). The blade is good and it's still a beefy knife for the size, but the handle is too small (same reason I don't really like Buck 112s... but still have five of them  ). For me, a 3.25+ inch knife is best, not for the blade length, but because of the handle.

I'll second the Vapor II, or just go with the Buck 110 that you have. In my opinion, you'll be hard pressed to find a more solid folder than a Buck 110.

EDIT: I really like that Howling Rat, and a great price. I may have to consider ditching my Camillus survival knife for that as a small camping knife this summer. I also like the Battle Rat, but I'll keep my RTAK (good memories of hacking through the forest with it).
