No arguments from me. Though there are steels that I like better, ATS34 and 154CM are very good stainless steels. I find that ATS34 is still the number one steel used by custom makers. Others are becoming more and more popular, but ATS34 still seems to be regarded very highly.

All things considered, I get more peace of mind from 154CM, being american-made n all.

We don't need no steenking vacuum!

Hey I like it as well! It is not as good as VG-10 or BG-42 but heck my MOD CQD DD in my pocket is made from 154CM.

Anyone notice how the Gerber ATS-34 does not seem to hold an edge anywhere near as good as a 154CM/ATS-34 blade from Microtech, MOD or Benchmade? Strange that. Perhaps the heat reat is not as good or as hard?

Wayne, I would have to think that you are probably correct in assuming that the heat treat is not as well done on the Gerber knives. They may go for a lower hardness so that they sharpen easier, though I have never known that to be a problem with ATS34 in the 58-60 RC range. Do you know what Gerber gives as an RC value on their blades?

For whatever my opinion's worth, I always thought of the gerbers as just a little too cheap (not in price but in materials) to really play with the big boys (BM, MOD, EKI, Kershaw, CRKT etc.)

So I wouldn't buy a Gerber anyway. :)

A bad heat treat is a bad heat treat, don't matter what the steel is. Ats/154cm is great stuff. In fact I have some of the newer wonder steels and really don't see a noticable improvement. Funny thing is I am still a steel snob just is fun to try them all.
