Mrs. misque and I are long time Disneyworld pass holders. We usually go at least once a month. This year was different for us in that we've only been a few times and we thought we'd check out the newly re-furbished Mitsukoshi Dept. store in the Japan pavillion.
They've added some really high end stuff in this store that, in Japan, has been around since the 1600's, IIRC. Anyway, their Japanese kitchen knife display has some very nice stuff ranging from sub-$20.00 up to around $180.00. The quality on many of these appears quite good too.
They also have a handful of folders from Hiro/Seki-Cut in Seki City. And, get this, they have a few customs for sale from a pair of Japanese hot steel beaters(GEEZ! I can't remember their names though).
Now, my jaw flopped open when I first saw those handmade knives. They had three from one maker and four from the other fella ranging from a little kiridashi to a camp knife. Definately not the typical fare I'm so used to seeing at Disneyworld.
The prices were reasonable too considering it is inside of Disneyworld. About what you'd pay for a handmade out here in the real world.
They also have the ho-hum tourist crap in the form of katanas, waki's and tantos singley and in a daisho and so on. :barf:

These knives have to be shipped to your home address or some other place off property. No cash and carry inside the mouse house for cutlery items, unfortunately.

Still, this was such a unique and shocking find for me I just had to share with other knife-nuts. If ya go to EPCOT, be sure to check it out.

All the best,
Mike U.

The trend continues at the China Pavillion.....

The Norwegian exhibit has puuko's, which looked nice, but have the same shipping only policy.

Yeah, I went and got a hand-forged knife from a maker in Japan signed in kanji on the blade. Flat ground with a distinct hamon for $160.00 and they sent it to member services so that I could pick it up on the way out. I hadn't heard about the shipping only policy, is that new?

I inquired about purchasing and the Disney-droid on duty at the time informed me about that. I'd also been told the same thing at the Norwegian pavillion when I was looking at their Brusletto puukkos. I'm very happy to see from your experience that it apparently isn't set in stone.

BTW, the Norwegian pavillion seems to be eliminating their stock of puukkos because I see fewer and fewer each time I go and no replenishment of stock has taken place there in over a year now that I've seen. :( Their prices were overblown on those items anyway IMO. Too bad though, because those curly birch puukko handles are real eye candy. :D

I think this is a refreshing turn of events in this world of Hellywood induced knife-phobia that many, if not most, people seem to have bought into.
HOORAY FOR MICKEY!!

All the best,
Mike U.
