Since I can't seem to get enough of this man's work, I had him fix up yet another knife for me. This time a Spyderco C40P Jot Khalsa. Charoite (stabilized stone)handle with gold lip pearl inlays. Back spacer is buffalo horn with pearl inlay. Fully file-worked of course.

Bob Engath's book describes stabilized stone as: "generally made from the original mineral which has been ground and reformed into a usable mass with the use of plastic binders" Dunno if that helps or not.

There is an entire page of stone samples on Frank's site at: http://members.xoom.com/ats34/stone.html

OK I know there are some curious people out there wondering about the material on the Jot Spyder knife is all about , Yes as Dale puts it it is made from natural nuggets of Charoite finly ground and reformed under high heat and pressure using other minerals and resins for bonding. The material is actully a Lavender color rather then the blue you see, this material also comes in Green banded Malachite, the name says it all, and it is a very nice stone, then there is Deep blue Lapis with pyrite flecs, Sugalite> purple with black veining, Several varieties of turquoise including clear (no veining), pink Rodonite with black veining, and many others, there is also Deep red coral (and i mean deep), gold spiny with bands of pale gold running through it, and many other types of materials on the charts. I am one of the first Knife Smith's to use this material, and have been using it for well over 10 years. Incidently, Sal Glesser saw the Jot knife at the NY show, and Jot himself took a look at it and said he was honered, I think I am the one who was honered by a Master Maker for saying he was honered at what was done to his design. Stay tuned for more of Frank's work in a few days.
