I just got my first Emerson an 05 Waved Commander and it tok a couple of days to sink in just how good this knife is. I like fixed blades mostly but needed a folder for those occasions where a small fixed blade is not appropriate. I ended up getting a good deal from a friend of a Spyderco Chinook3 and the Waved plain edge Commander. I normally would not have bought the Emerson but it was to good a deal for both knives and I really liked Keating's style of knife fighting.

The blade on the Commander is the sharpest knife I own and it even beats the Lambert custom that was the former holder of that title.
It even looks a lot like my favourite fixed fighter in miniature the Scrapyard HookGuard.

The ergos are perfect with a place for every finger and those textured edges lock your hand even even when wearing gloves. They are not that comfy but for a fighter that is really not that important.

The best thing about it is not any single feature like the "Wave" or the razor edge but the totality of the design and how well it works for draw cuts in a sabre grip.
It is perfectly designed for locking the handle into your hands and making devastating cuts. A knife small enough for a folder is to small for a thrust to hit a vital organ or most vital arteries and is to light for a slash to have effect. The draw cut is the best choice for a fighting folder and the Commander is the best tool for that job I have seen so far.

I am new to EKI and would be willing to bet that they have a fixed blade that is very similar to the Commander but with a 4 and a half to 5 inch blade?

So far I am really pleased with my first Emerson.

the only non custom fixed blades emerson makes are the Karambit and the PUK(police utility knife) something to your design specs has been produced to my knowledge. I was certainly be interested in something like that!

Darn I would have thought a fixed Supreme Commander would be a No-Brainer?

Here is a photo of the Commander and my favourite fixed blade the very similar looking
Scrapyard HookGuard.

They even both have a hook.

Ummmm...... nope !!!

On an average individual the following common, potentialy lethal targets are:

(depth of artery under the skin in inches)

Bracial- 0.5"
Radial- 0.25"
Carotid- 1.5"
Subclavian- 2.5
Heart (aortic arch)- 3.5"

As you can see they are all easily accessable even with a short knife.

But, yes, Emersons are good knives and the Commander is indeed a sweet blade.

Glad your happy with your first EKI, i hope you have many more to come. I know i have quite a few in my collection.

yes that is true^ but one more thing. try making a fist when the inside of your elbow is slashed. arterial cuts are too major

Glad to see you are happy with your new Emerson Commander, A great all round EDC folder which many will say is probly their most favorite knife.

As for vital/ organs, artiers and ect, A small razor sharp knife even at 2 inches long can do tremendous amounts of damage to vitals, Slashes and stabs with a short knife would be great at short range since most fights are in an area of 15 feet and less like in a pub or bar for example, A larger knife is great for range attacks and slashes but givin you are in a short range it is possible to immobilize the weapon without bringing harm to ones self. If you have ever witnessed a knife attack on a person and seen the damage you will be shocked at what a small box cutter can do or even a 3 inch stilletto will when a persons intents are to physically cause harm or to kill, One of the worst moves I've ever learned is at the back of the skull where the skull comes down to the neck, (curved area where the spinal cord and neck vertebrae connect) the medulla oblongata has a slight area which is unprotected and a small knife like the commander and a quick stab/ jab can kill an opponent in seconds if you know how to utilize arm locks and wrestling moves to get into a position for such a strike. Like my fav saying goes. "If you get into a fight on the street without any intent to cause harm or kill that person you have already lost that fight." But none the less you should always try to avoid the situation at all cost.

Happy to see you love your Emerson Commander and I will hopefully own one too! :D

Valid points added there.

I was going to mention nerve damage, ligament damage, tendon damage, shock and blood loss and as well, but then we are ment to be congratulating him on his first shiney new Emerson rather than discusing the results of knife fighting !!!:D

Thanks for all the congrats on my new EKI.
There are lots of arteries within reach of a short knife but they are all rather difficult to hit compared with piercing a vital organ with a FS Dagger. The subclavion may only be 2.5 inches but it is in a darn awkward place having to strike straight down into the collarbone with an icepick grip. The most practical attack with a small knife is definitly to go for the kind of huge cuts and massive blood oss the Commander seems designed specifically for.

My point is that is the type of attack that I want my fighting folder for and the Commander is the best I have ever seen designed for this type of cutting.

This is especially true when there are guns envoled and the person is going to shoot someone.

I carry my "old" Commander on ocassion as an edc. Very thick liner lock and I put new scales on it. Now here is the deal as I see it. I did a test a few years back with an old carhart jacket and an old leather bike jacket. Put them on a dummy and stuffed the arms with newspapers. I owned a EKI 7b and a at the time if I remember correctly and was comparing them against a couple of old CS Voyagers I own.

Other knives were involved too but for the life of me I can't remember which ones. Bottom line is that all knives cleanly would shave hair and slice paper etc. with extreme ease. The deal is my CS Voyagers out performed pretty much all my others that I tested on the mediums. I mean out performed them by a wide wide margin. For stabbing and slashing etc. I am no blade martialist by any stretch but an average person just wanting to do a bit of testing. It may be in the archives but I was quite surprised by the results.

My point to all this is that I was curious about people wearing winter type coats. How that would effect the performance of a blade if I had to use one. I also switch my hand gun loads for winter carry as opposed to summer carry. Lighter loads in the summer, heavier in the winter. Anyways just food for thought. keepem sharp
