in this forum atleast :P
hey everyone, simmy got me into this forum, i doubt ill talk a lot in here, but maybe

my dad bought me a stainless police a while back because im doing so well in school, what a nice knife :P

question is, why was it soo hard to find? why was it discontinued?

The stainless Police model hasn't been DC'd...It has been improved with VG-10 steel and the Boye dent. I carry one as part of my "EDC".

Custom knifemaker David Boye removed a small arc or dent of metal from the top locks of his knives. This removed piece lessened the possibility of gripping the handle hard enough to depress the lock and accidentally unlock the blade while using the knife.

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum! While you could as noted use the search function to find your answers, on a popular model like the Spyderco Police you'd get so many hits you'd be busy for a week reading them.

Enjoy the forums. I'm pleased to see your father gave you a knife. It represents his trust and respect for your judgment. Don't disappoint him.

Welcome aboard and congratualtions for your new fine knife. The Police model is one of the most successful knives made by Spyderco.
As about the Boye dent, I have knives with and without this feature and frankly I can't see the difference. Never had any problems with a Spydie :)

As a kid, just be careful where you carry the knife. The Police is a hair over 4 inches, which makes it illegal in a lot of places. With "Police" on the blade, it can also be construed as a weapon (i.e. designed for the police). These are the biggest drawbacks of this knife design. However, the now discontiued Rookie has the same blade design, but is less than 4 inches w/o the risky name.

i doubt the knife was designed for police, where i live, there is no blade length matter

couldnt i remove the word police somehow?

I'm glad you've come here for the first time, apparently with such great knowledge of the product line and matching tact
After all, no need to learn when you already know everything.

The knife was designed for the police. As such, some law enforcement types could consider it a weapon. It is certainly not a rescue-type blade. Then if the Police is concealed in your pocket, it can become a concealed weapon irrespective of length through the officer's interpretation. That's why a lot of people don't like blades with inflammatory names on the steel.

dont be a dink, its my opinion on the design, no need for your degrading input

Aaron, I only act as a "dink" in response to the attitude with which you've come into this sub-forum.

We all appreciate your interest in this knife, but whether you like it or not, you have to accept the fact that other people might know more than you if you ever want to learn anything. With all due respect, your "opinion on the design" is quite irrelevant to its past.

So here's a free history lesson on the Police model:

In 1982, Spyderco released the Mariner. It was well received and popular enough to merit carry from numerous Law Enforcement Officers. I know this from Sal Glesser's posts (founder and head of Spyderco), from The Spyderco Story (a book published by Paladin Press), and from the fact that a close family friend of mine who served in the FBI for almost 30 years still owns the Mariner that was given to him by the FBI.
Law Enforcement Agencies loved the knife, but wanted a blade with a point rather than a sheepsfoot so they went to Spyderco with their requests. Spyderco, being a company that listens to its users, designed the Police model and released it in 1984.
The first Police models that Spyderco released did not have the traditional "Police" engraving on the blade. Rather, they had "Pride Integrity Guts" there instead, making fun of the derogatory term "pig" used against Law Enforcement. Today, these P.I.G. Police models are hard to find.
Spyderco later went to the regular "Police" engraving and since then has continued to modify the model with steel changes and the addition of the Boye dent.

That's about as basic a history as you can get on it and shows that it was in fact originally designed for Police officers.

As to removing the engraving from the blade: you could do so, but would leave a noticeable gouge in the steel.

www.Spyderco.com offers much in the way of product knowledge, and can show you (with pictures) what a Boye Dent is. But that's not why I got annoyed. I got annoyed because of your seemingly coarse attitude. Perhaps that's how you speak with your friends, but usually people here have more courtesy with each other than to simply say "what the hells a boye dent."

I lost my SS Police model at work,I still have not recovered from that. Some **** found it and kept it,I sure of that.

sorry think of the children, its my faulty, i should have posted my origional opinion in an "i think" tone.

for my police, it looks like a skateboard tape, not engraved, is this normal?

Hi Aaron. Welcome to the Spyderco forum and thanx for your interest.

The group that seems to visit here is quite astute in the world of "Specialty knives". I have also found them to be mature as well as honest in their opinions. Even when they disagree with me, they'll hold me to the task of explanation and won't take any BS from me.

The Police model is a special model with a 30 year history, many variations and evolutions. As mentioned, it demonstrates trust, pride and respect on your father's part.

I hope you enjoy your knife and I hope you enjoy your time spent here.

Well, Aaron, sorry I got snippy with you.

A lot of engraving of model names on blades is now done with lasers. My VG-10 SS handled Police model is regularly engraved, but my VG-10 CF handled Police is laser engraved. I would assume this is what you mean by the name looking like "skateboard tape." It's rougher and darker, and yes, it's shallower than the older engraving but you would still have to grind deep enough into the blade that the result would be ugly.

Not to say that you couldn't do it, but it would look nasty... and might actually look worse to authorities than the original "Police" engraving. It might look like you tried to get rid of someone's name that was engraved (like you stole it) or as if you had removed some sort of a serial number (like some illegal firearms that have been altered).

Aaron, it has been a long time since I was a teenager, 40 years, in fact, but I suspect that my experiences probably haven't changed all that much, since I was growing up in the Washington, DC, area and attending school in the city itself. If you want to carry a knife like a Spydie Police, I would suggest that your best protection from having problems with the local constabulary is to take a low profile. Not attracting hostile attention to yourself by looking and behaving like a punk or a gang-banger is much the easiest way of avoiding trouble with police as a kid or as an adult. Although carrying knives may have been legal wherever I went back then, you may be assured that kids were rousted by the police on a regular basis if they looked like what were considered punks back then. You can see the image if you look at John Travolta and friends in the movie Grease. They had the charming name of "juvenile delinquents" at that time and the weapon that was going to end society as we knew it was the terrible "switchblade", as seen in the film Blackboard Jungle, the movie that got automatics all but banned in the USA.

Understand, I am not saying that you have to follow any of my thoughts, but I found that it made life easier.

im not going to carry it with me all the time, i have a cheapie schrade stockman, and when i get it, my case hobo, maybe someday when i get a new job, and i use my knives that i have right now, i will buy something smaller (the police is too big for me right now)

im not going to grind the police engraving either, its just that when i wash the blade , it looks like the skateboard tape appearance is fading, dono
