Ok I just picked up a #1 8. I am so so so impressed with its quickness livleness and balance. I have had a BUNCH of knives over the years and I have never held anything that felt so much like what a fighter should feel like. It may not dig trenches or chop down trees but for pure speed, grip change all out fighter I have never held a better example. Everything about this knife from grip, guard, balance and blade are geared for one thing. Fighting. Incredible. Im so impressed. The more I practice with it the more impressed I get. This knife was thought out.

When I first read your post I thought you had picked up a Model #18 and as I thought about what you had said I came to realize you meant a Model #1-8. Am I right? You've got a Model #1 with an 8 inch blade? This would make more sense to me. I was struggling with the use of a #18 as a fighter. I think I've got it now.

My favorite is the 7" but probably only because I haven't owned an 8" before. Have you owned both and what do you think about the merits or demerits of that extra 1"?.

Model 1 8" I should have been more careful in who I wrote it. I played with there wears at last years Crowne show in NYC. I was impressed with the model #1 then. I went to this years November show at the SHeraton with the mind of getting that or a #14. Of course Andy was there with this cool busse steel heart varient and well the rest is history. I played with randalls some more though and decided it would have to be a #1. I have had some time now to play with it and it exceeds my initial impression. I hope to see them at this years crowne show. Hmm I wonder what I NEED now.

I just picked up my model 1-6 this morning and am having similar feelings - these things are incredible. I was skeptical that I would want to use my new knife, but after handling it I can hardly wait. I had been after the 7" model originally, but when this one, which had the options I wanted, came up for sale I couldn't resist. I do have a couple of Randall newbie questions that I hope someone can help me with:

- I am proficient at sharpening with my Apex Edgepro and know I could put a better edge on the knife than the current factory job. The top edge is not as even as I would like and when running the main edge along my nail it catches slightly out near the tip. Would a good sharpening job lower the value any?

- The nickel silver hilt is a little bit yellow compared to the butt cap - is this tarnish? I am guessing that the buttcap is aluminum? Any suggestions as to the best way to clean and polish the hilt up?

- Upon very, very close inspection I can see a couple of tiny patches of black looking corrosion along the top sharpened edge and near the tip of the knife. There is also a very, very small indent/pit in the blade on the opposite side of the Randall logo. I would guess this pit is normal and common with a hand forged O1 blade? As for the black stuff forming, any recommendations on how to best clean and remove?

Any thoughts people would care to share would be appreciated, I am very excited about this new purchase!

Thanks,
David

My #1-8" was my first real knife. It actually measures only about 7 5/8" and its been that way since new!. I think they must have had trouble getting the point right. I found out about Randall Knives from a newspaper article my Grandmother cut out for me to read one winter when I visited her in FL!!!That was over 20 years ago.
This knife has been used as a camp knife, survival knife, life saver, etc....It's been all over the country by motorcylcle. Now it's covered in Renaisance Wax and retired! It will be passed on to my oldest son, when he settles down! It's one of my two favorite knives

Snoopy, Randalls are not only a great user, they are also consider to be a hot collectable. If you sharpen it, it isn't Mint anymore. I am assuming it currently is. However, if you are planning on using it, as opposed to setting it on display, it won't be Mint anyway so sharpening won't matter. The black dots, pepper, can be removed with a cotton buffing wheel and a light cleaning compound (commonly called green stick, comes in a tube and is green in color). Both can be found at places like Home Depot and such. Mount the cotton buffing wheel on one side of your grinder, turn it on, touch green stick to wheel until it picks up a nice coating of green, then pass the area of the knife with the pepper over the wheel and it will remove it and polish the area without leaving any grind marks. Hope this helps.

So THAT'S why you're selling/sold the Fowler! I had my eye on both of them @ the NYCKS, but sadly, not the bucks...
Enjoy! You are a man with good taste in cutlery!
Ebbtide out.

you got me Ebbtide, Thats exactly why I sold the Fowler. It to was nice but this is something else. Not only does it handle like a dream in any grip but just sitting on the table doing nothing and it is soooooo good looking. I may have to buy a smaller randall at the Crowne.

Snoopy use flittz metal polish, My #2 8 has forward curved nickel guard and duralum buttcap and this is what I use.

Alex, fill us in on the rest of the knife!! I have had several Randalls, loved them all, hunters, fighters, there awsome! What handle material did you get, what pommell and end cap? I think my favorite is the black Micarta, with nickle silver hilt.
Enjoy it!
Matt

Thanks for the replies. Sorry for mixing this in with Alex's post, the timing was perfect for when my first Randall arrived.

HEy Pontiaker:
I bought it in the standard setup. I am however oneof those people who have to mess with everything. So first things I did was take out some carnuba cream on the leather space handle adn then 40 minutes with brown paste shoe polish. It didnt really change the handle color much it just gave it a deeper appearence. The individual spacers are still very distinguishable from one another but a little richer. I had the knife on my soloflex and with the light playing off the blade, the brass double guard and just a twinkle from the butt cap....well I was in love. I am going to look over what they bring to the NY show but I think I have a Model #1 5" with commando grip in black micarta or ironwood in my heart and near future. Yummy Yummy.
