I picked up a blem, a BAS I beleive, about a year or two ago. When i got it, I was quite impressed. I originally bought it for my dad as a fathers day gift, but, for personnal reasons, realized I should probably get something else for him, so it fell into my line up. I must admit, I really couldn't get the thing to cut, and try as I may, i just couldn't sharpen it. I put here away for some time. When I finally picked her back up again, the handle (horn) had shrunk, and she was still dull;) . I poured over posts here, and with the attitude that I either wreck it in the attempt, or not use her anyway, I finally decided to get things "right". Superglue and thread (more thread then I thought) got the butt-cap to stop moving, and liberal time with a file, a dowel, sandpaper and a small pocket stone finally have it so she can cut :D I still can't figure out how to get the "hair poping edge" some of you talk about, I think the "grind" may just be to thick, but she now preforms all my camp chores, and actually cuts through tree limbs (before she just sort of smashed em). Not as pretty now, due to a few stray runs with the sandpaper, but a knife now! Thanks for the tips (from years back in some cases). I finally get what you folks are excited about.

Depends on the use, but even a square angle; or even a very obtuse angle
(wide, wide, wide......wider...:D...base pyramid) will slice a surface
like a razor. -If- the two planes of the edge meet exactly.

:::::::::::::::::::: not ..'.'~'''..~''..'..~'..'''.'..

The more even in all three dimensions, the better.
Holds for serrated edges too,

To penetrate......the thinner the blade behind the edge the less
resistance/friction in parting the material cut.

The blade thickness and the angle down to the edge are a balancing
act depending on the intended use.
Chop? Slice? What material? How durable? Pry bar?

I remember seeing a tiny microtome blade once that was about
1/8" thick with only one side honed to 45 degrees.
It could shave a gnat.
