The WPC is pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Seamen Slinger Extravaganza. As in previous years, the main focus will be on the ocean and harvesting edibles from it. Each year, people with little or no ocean experience have learned to freedive and successfully harvest abalone and spear fish. Most who participated would call it "a life changing event." In addition to freediving, there is amazing near shore fishing, easily accessible by kayak. This year, we are trying to arrange some more activities for the shore bound. One activity will hopefully be a class on harvesting and preparing seaweed for food. Another might be a class focusing on terrestrial plants. This is on top of the trap building, knife sharpening, stick fighting, raccoon beating, fire making, hiking, exploring, eating, and ****-talking that just naturally pops up when surrounded by such great people.

Despite what the flyer says, this year the SSE will not be at the Reef campground. The Reef camp ground has been closed for the year due to California's amazing fiscal prowess. We have secured a campground a few miles up the coast that is in an equally beautiful spot. There are some pros to the new location like separation from other campers and the site is bigger. There are trails that lead up into the hills and some close dive spots including a marine reserve that has calm water that is perfect for introducing new divers. I went there on Tuesday and snapped some pics.

We will still be diving at the same spots as last two years but there will be close access to new spots for those that want to try some place new.

Also any and all active military and there families will camp for FREE. In addition I would be happy to help arrange FREE freediving equipment for any active duty military who would like to go diving. Yes FREE! Mako Spearguns has a free loaner program for any active duty military. If you need to fly here, we will feed you.

If you are a regular working guy and money is tight and you have always wanted to try free diving let me know and I will do my best to get you in the water. I have boxes of old wet suits and and miscellaneous gear. So far no one who has shown up that wanted to dive has gone home without getting in the water.

If you have never eaten abalone you don't know what your missing.

You can tell by the photo why they taste so good.

Last year, we had some great sponsors:

Equinox Coronado, famous for their tomahawks, donated a large assortment of their innovative products.

John McCann, author of "Build the Perfect Survival Kit" and owner of Survival Resources, sent boxes of gear to give away. http://www.bepreparedtosurvive.com/

Clif Bar made sure no one went went hungry and that we all had the energy to make it through the week (4 days of teaching freediving takes it out of you).

Rob Lyttle of Woodbite sent a beautiful bushcraft knife that was given away to the new diver with the biggest abalone. He has since stopped taking orders for knives because the demand for his work became too great after the exposure he received at our event.

Fluid Film made sure everyone left with some of their lubricant/rust inhibitor as well as shirts and hats.

On top of all that booty, many WPC members donated great custom made gear including sling shots, kydex, and stoves. I can't even mention that everyone received Arrow Cards (patent pending) to test or how I made first kill with this brilliant new product that hasn't been released yet.

This year we have some great sponsors again who are providing a huge assortment of prizes and items to give away. We have survival gear, outdoor gear, First aid supplies, custom knives, custom sheaths, packs, food and even our own lube sponsor.

In total, there was probably a couple grand in prizes and giveaways. No one left empty handed.

This year promises to be even more amazing. *More contest! More Prizes! More Booty taking!

Plus special guest appearance!

Other activities might include
101 ways to kill befriend a raccoon
How to take a Russian Ft
Jazzercize
I wonder if that's edible?
How to beat someone with a stick
Roller disco competition
Zen and the Art of Marshmellow roasting.
Guess whats up my kilt
Johnbar will demonstate how to smoke thru a snorkel if not we can just learn by watching.
How to protect your booty from pirates( unless you feel like sharing)
Sonoma county is also well known for its wine production. So if you are a........well lets just say golfer and you like to drink wine there are numerous vineyards in the area.

The bottom line is that I love the Ocean. It is a part of me and my life. It has given me so much peace and happiness that I feel I have to share it. You are all welcome to come and share. If you know anyone who might be interested in coming, feel free to pass the invitation on. If you or anyone you know have anything you wish to contribute, please contact us.

If you need help arranging transportation, gear, or food, especially if you are travelling far to attend the event, let us know. We always ensure those who make the effort to come from far are well fed and provisioned.

The date is fast approaching so let me know if you are coming. Hopefully the Ocean will great us with the same loving gentleness that she has in years past.

See you soon.

Matt,

That looks awesome!!!!! I just got back from a 10 day yak trip in the Mammoth lakes area. Ill see if I can get some cash together, this looks like to much fun to miss.

Thanks,

Chris

From the title of this post I thought it should have been put in the pirates page, then I saw the pic of the abalone and that kind of grossed me out, I was afraid to scroll down... I did and realized you were talking about diving and spear fishing. whoo I almost blushed

Come to an event, you will be hooked for life. Good people, camping, showing off gear, BSing around the fire and eating great food, and of course the diving and spear fishing not to mention the harassment of certain masked mammalians...
I will be serving Thai fish curry at this event-

Death to raccoons!

It looks like a great time despite the title of the gathering, I will talk it over with the wife...

I'm hoping to make it out to this, if I can pull together the cash and gear in time

I'm working on having my mask, fins, and weight belt brought to me from home, so for now, it's just the wetsuit and booties, and whatever abalone-associated gear is required (prying tool, boogie board, other?). I'm going to get sized for a wetsuit and see how much a rental would be. If it's too expensive, I'd be grateful to borrow some gear from someone if the sizing works.

I have always been curious, how does abalone taste?
Abalone has a very light, subtle flavor that many people abuse when they cook it. I have had it many ways and I prefer it to not be over seasoned. Honestly, it tastes like abalone. The closest I can come would be a calamari flavor I suppose. There will be much abalone to go around if you show up. We had to finish off what we cooked last year out of guilt because we had so much on the last night. The homemade cheesecake didn't help. I am pretty sure that the cheesecake will be there again this year as I am the one bringing it. There will be homemade blackberry syrup to help wash the cheesecake down, too. We don't do anything half-assed. Don't worry about gaining any weight while there; 3 to 5 hours in the water a day will burn anything off.

Dont worry, the campout is really good family fun.

I will be attending and have an extra size large wetsuit, size 9 booties and an XL hood for loan to anyone that needs gear.
As a note of reference, my first freedive was at last years SSE and I've been hooked ever since, spearing, ab plucking etc. To the point that I have already upgraded to where I have stuff to loan. It is a blast folks and if you've ever thought about giving diving a try this is the prime opportunity to do so. You'll be diving with seasoned pro's like Oakietree and 762 Shooter as well as novice enthusiastic intrepid morons like me. Its a whole different world down there. Plus the BS and genuine characters in attendence, along with the food and scenery of the NorCal coast make it an not to be missed event for me. Counting down the days now...

That is the ab we found the pearl in, FWIW :)
McHellfire, I think you can consider yourself a seasoned pro at this point. I have heard tales of the **** you have paddled out into. Bad weather and big swells make the abs taste better...

Man that sounds like a blast!

You are more than welcome. You would fit right in. If you want to try to make it out and need anything like flight info, transpo., gear, whatever- let me know. We hunt and fish the ocean non-stop. You would have a great time, thou the water might be a little colder than you are used to. Unfortunately we dont have gators but some day maybe they will let us hunt seals again.
This was a rock scallop that I ate for lunch today

There is plenty of good things to eat.

Damn that's awesome. No way I can swing it this year. But my brother is in Washington state for next few years, so a trip out to that side of the country is certainly in order. I got a feeling I'd get along with y'all for sure.

seamen slinger? you guys couldnt come up with something a little less, well, funny?

And this is coming from a guy whose screen name is Hung Solo? :) It is a spearfishing event, we sling spears in the sea. In truth it keeps away the uptight and invokes some humor and humility in the new comers. The ocean here is too dangerous if you dont have some humor and humility. If you take yourself too seriously and are too rigid the ocean here can break you. If a person cant laugh at themself and move passed difficulties they will have a lot of trouble. I think 6 or 7 people have died since april abalone diving. That is not even bringing the sharks into it. So calling it the Seamen Slinger weeds out some potential problems. Of course, anyone named Hung Solo will always be welcome.

Oh and once you see an abalone in person the term "eating abalone" has a double meaning. I cant really say more because I got a warning for saying the "pirate treasure" would be bigger this year.

Please tell me you guys are making tee shirts.

Now I know you would fit right in. There has been a bit of discussion. One friend was supposed to be working on it. There is a chance if I get everything else in place I will have time. Any catch phrase suggestions. Maybe "I got wet at the Seamen Slinger" or "Seamen slingers get more (pirate treasure)" Maybe "I could eat abalone all day long" or "I went down deep to eat the abalone". So many possibilities. That is even touching on subject of bottom time, how long one can stay under water.

What size shirt do you wear? If I get them done Ill send you one.

Matt
