The Westside Pirate Crew presents-

The NorCal Seamen Slinger Extravaganza!
Get wet and surrender your booty…….Again!

That’s right! It is time once again! From September 8th thru the 12th the greatest gathering of droogs, dregs, and scoundrels ever to occur, at that exact time and location, in the history of the world, will take place on the north coast of California. We will assemble to explore and celebrate the greatest wilderness on the entire planet Earth, the magnificent Pacific Ocean.
This assemblage will take place at the Reef campground, in Ft Ross State Park. Ft Ross is located in Sonoma County, California approximately 14 miles north of Jenner. The Reef campground is nestled in a small canyon lined with CA Redwoods, the tallest trees on earth. A short hike will bring you to a restored Russian fur trading fort that is open to the public along w/ a natural history museum of the area. There is abundant wildlife including Blacktail Deer, Boar, and an occasional Mt Lion. The place is overrun with raccoons.
A reminder the campground is just south of the fort

The activities planned for the event primarily involve getting wet. The Sonoma coast is abundant in sea life which will hopefully end up as food for us. The place is well known for its Red Abalone. Abalone is a large sea snail that is considered one of the ocean’s greatest delicacies.

There are also numerous species of rock fish that can be taken either by spear fishing or with hook and line. There is an easy kayak launch at Ft Ross that allows quick access to rocky reefs just off shore. The fishing is excellent. It is also possible to surf fish and poke pole around the tide pools. The ocean and the adjacent land here is so ridiculously abundant. Edible creatures and plants are everywhere.

If you are interested in freediving the Nor Coast for the first time please feel free to PM and I can help with gear section. There are a number of dive shops in Sonoma County that rent the complete set up for around $35. You will also need a valid CA fishing license and an Abalone punch card. Be warned that the ocean in NorCal is cold and can be very dangerous. There are supposedly a lot of Great White Sharks in the area. So if you are some sort of pussy and afraid of sharks, it is something you should consider. In all honesty you are you are way more likely to drown then get bit. I, as well as other experienced divers, will be happy to team up with you to show you the ropes. Last year several new divers got limits of abalone on multiple days.
Last year’s event was a great success and this year’s is looking to be even better. In addition to free diving, people practiced and shared all sorts of outdoor skills and compared, tested and traded gear. This year we will have prizes in numerous categories as well as give away items from various sponsors.
Sponsors already include:

Equinox Coronado

Survival Resources

We have also received offer from various custom knife makers whose work will be part of the booty at the event.

In case you missed it here are some photos from last year.

For people coming from out of state SFO and Oakland are probably the closest airports. There are shuttles from both that will take you to the Santa Rosa Airport which is just a short distance from Ft Ross. We will coordinate with you to get you there.

This will be a family friendly so we encourage everyone to bring their spouses, children and pets. All attendees are expected to maintain a certain level of respect. Those who don’t will be dealt with severely. On the other hand if you are easily offended you probably better off staying at home.
Please let us know in advance if you plan on attending so we can grab as many campsites as needed. While camping will run about $20 per car there is no fees for this event.

this looks like a blast... i will take a look at our calendar and see if we can pull it...:)

Dude....I wanna go! Anybody want to carpool from the South Bay? I have no car.
Tycho, PM me your were abouts and I will see about hooking you up with a ride from someone. We have at least a couple of members in your area. Hopefully your body odor ain't too bad...;)

PM sent.

I think body odor is the least of your problems, given that you're having an event called "The NorCal Seamen Slinger Extravaganza." I'll be sure to shower as long as you don't put me with any weirdos. :D

I wish I could go I used to live in crescent city ca and the north coast is amazing for the outdoors men unfortunately I now live in Oklahoma but maybe one day I can go home good luck to all that attend keep safe

btt Gonna be a great event. There will be a prize for the person who travels the farthest to the event...

THought I'd post this from last years event. Abalone is a delicacy for those of you that haven't had the pleasure...

Originally, I was going to have Oakietree post this. Alas, the amount of pictures required was somewhat oppressive so I am going to post the DIY and Oakietree can make any corrections he deems necessary. And I am sure he will deem...

First grab your ab-
Picture1976.jpg

Second taste test, Oakie said that this one tasted fine and would be palatable. He is a master.
Picture1978.jpg

Next slide your ab iron, (you do have an ab iron don't you?) into the front underside of the abalone. The front is the portion of the ab that slopes downward away from the spiral on the abs back. The line of holes on top of the abalone run from front to back. The abalone is connected to it's shell via a circle of "meat" that is just about centered on the shell. Make sure that the ab iron is sliding along the underside of the shell and not into the foot of the ab. Once you his the meat connecting to the shell , push and peel, working your way around the circle. a prying motion is used.
Picture1979.jpg

More pushing peeling and prying-
Picture1982.jpg

After about 10 to 30 seconds of this, POP!
Picture1983-1.jpg

Now for the gutting. There is an obvious sac that runs along the top portion of the ab. It is the part that you look at and say, "I don't want to eat that." Some people look at the whole abalone and say that, they just haven't done enough cutting on it yet.
The 'guts' rim the top of the abalone and are connected by a very thin skin. It is easy to cut until you get to the front of the ab, near the mouth.
Picture1986.jpg

Very rarely for the most advanced and skilled ab divers, and even then only the best of the best, is an ab found that has pearls in it. These are extremely rare and very telling of the skill and devotion of the diver to his craft. I found this ab, (as if I had to tell any of you this)
Picture1987.jpg

Here, the 'guts' are in the final stage of removal, the mouth is being removed as the last bit. All of the guts and mouth can usually be removed as one piece if you are as skilled as Oakie.

More later...

This sounds awesome, will see if I can work it out. Never been freediving here in CA before (in fact, it's been ages since I've done any real freediving), so I'd be the super green newb....

How long would it take one to get a CA fishing license and Abalone punch card?

Any sporting goods store in the bay area should have them. Big 5, Walmart, Etc. Just walk in and get it over the counter.

If you need info on gear PM me.

Hope you make it. It looks to be about 30 people of all different diving experience are planning on attending with over a month to go. Plus I am working on lining up some more sponsers.

Right on, sounds good

I'll be PMing you once I figure out if I'll be going or not. If I do make it, it'll be for Saturday and Sunday at most.

Part Deuce.

So we have the guts removed. Now to skin an abalone. Much easier than a cat.
Along the edges of the abs foot, it has black skin. The meat is white so it is easy to see if you have all of the skin removed. A good filet knife will do the trick nicely.
Picture1994.jpg

Work your way all the way around the ab.
Picture1994.jpg

If you are a master, like Oakie, you will get most of it in a strip.
Picture1996.jpg

Almost there. This is actually a good picture of the bottom of the abalone. This is the foot.
Picture1997.jpg

This picture shows the top of the abalone. Oakie is removing the skin here, also.
Picture1998.jpg

The last bit is to shave the skin off of the foot.
Picture1999.jpg

Once all of the skin has been removed, rinse your ab.
Picture2001.jpg

Ready for slicing.
Picture2002.jpg

A properly sliced abalone.
Picture2003.jpg

Abalone is tough meat. You don't want to eat it in this state. It needs to be tenderized. There are ab pounders that are made specifically for this; they are essentially meat tenderizers with a larger face. So, if you have the proper tool, beat your meat.
Picture2004.jpg

Once your meat has been properly tenderized, your are ready to cook it.

Getting stoked! :D So far, barring work emergencies and up-in-the-air apt. moving timeframe, I'm good to go for Sat and Sun, maybe Fri if I can get off work. Gotta remember to pick up the license and punch card...
