Well, I think its W-2. The hamon comes up quite different from "pure" 1095 and 1084 blades. I didn't forge this one at all, its entirely stock removed from an old file. I'm quite pleased with the finish since this is only the 2nd hollowground blade I've handrubbed. Its taken to a near polish with a 1500grit final hand rub. Comments welcomed. Jason.

very, very nice, jason. As a maker who hand finishes hollow grinds, I understand how difficult it is and it looks like you did a very nice job on this one. Might I ask your method of executing this procedure? The entire knife goes together just right. Looks very sharp and able to cut.

I'm still "playing" with hand rubbed finishing and polishing hollowgrinds. But, my way ... 240grit on the grinder, then start hand rubbing with 240grit. The 60 and 120grit marks that were hidden will be shown by the hand rub. Back to the grinder a few times till they're all gone. 400 grit, 800grit, 1200grit. The to the buffer with the green compound till it looks like a decent near-mirror polish. Then back to the hand rub with a final finish of 1500grit. The polish stage is an extra but it ensures that no large grit marks are lurking under the hand rub.

Oh yes, I haven't made a sanding tool yet. I am using a very firm piece of sole leather which I can bend to shape to fit ANY contour hollow. It makes it easier to sand an unconventional hollow - I am starting to like to grind like Jerry Hossum does - the "wrong" way with the edge down so the depth of the hollow is dragged a bit higher up towards the spine. This gives a much finer grind and sort of deeper hollow while still using a smaller contact wheel. I am using an 8inch wheel, this method allows me to put the grindline like a 10 inch wheel would do.

I'm sure other technique will come along. Jason.

I love the simplicity and elegance of your knives. Thanks for showing, it's always a pleasure :)
