Wrecking bar hawk

A friend of mine is going to Alaska this summer for the caribou season and wanted a hawk. I forged it from a chunk of hex wrecking bar. The handle is an unknown mahogany with a very complex grain. This is the first hawk handle I turned on the lathe and it allowed me to put a little contour into it. The grip is 8 oz leather x stitched and secured with brass dome nails. I cut in an 1/8" deep section for the grip so it comes up flush with the handle. The grip was given several coats of danish oil to water proof it. The handle was finished with at least thirty coats of high gloss tung oil.

I let him actually do some of the forging and finish work on it just to personalize it a bit. This also was an eye opener for him to see how much work goes into one.

Wow, that's a complete package, right down to the high quality sheath. Good job, and thanks for posting!

Thanks all! Someday I will get a membership to these forums and then I can post pics directley.

He got the hawk last night and was very happy with it. He was even happier when he found out it was a gift. With all that he has done for myself and my family the very least I could do was give it to him. It is always cool to make someones day.

Well done , I like it I like it I like it . Does the handle go in from the top like a regular hawk ? How tight does it wedge onto the shaft . I betcha that hammer poll would do the job . Nice work .

You can post pics directly if you host your pics somewhere like photobucket and post the url of the pics with

The head goes on from the top but I left some haft above it, slotted it and then wedged it. I hacked through a 8" dia chunk of seasoned douglas fir trying to get it to loosen. Along with the chopping I also gave it alot of side to side prying to try to loosen it and it held firm. He will be out in the bush for almost a month so I don't want it to fail.

After chopping the chunk of doug fir it still easily shaved my arm hair. I will be getting a teardrop drift early next week so i plan on doing many more hawks and belt axes. I have more designs then hours in the day to do them all.
