Hello everyone, Went to the barn sale Sat to check out this Wright anvil again. The owner let me check the rebound with a 8oz hammer. I let the hammer drop with its own weight and it bounced up about 4 or 5? inches. The ring was clear and nice too. I know this thing has a new top to it and it was painted also. He is selling it for a dollar a pound 150.00 it may even weight more. Am I taking some chances here with a repaired anvil? opinions are welcomed Thanks. Chris

if the ring is clear all over the top then it doesn't have separated areas, if there are dull areas that go "Tick" instead of "Ding" the top is separating. Personally I'd get it, worst thing if it develops issues down the road you can get a better anvil later, but you will have had this one to work with in the mean time. I started out with crappy anvils that I got nearly free, then i got a swaybacked Peter Wright which was an improvement, so I sold the better spongy anvil for twenty bucks to one of my students and threw the other one in free since he was letting me run weekly hammer-ins in his garage, I have since gotten a straight backed Peter Wright and a really nice Hay Budden. Get the Peter wright and keep your eye out for better ones while you work on the one you have.

A buck a pound for a beat up peter write is not bad. If it looks as good as you say, get it. Finding a decent anvil is not easy. Unless you are willing to $3-4/ pound and buy new. Go for it.
