Wrong Blade?

Today I received my new Vantage Force Select only to find out that it has a 13C26 blade instead of the standard 420HC one. The knife and dealer are both legit, so the "error" must have happened at the factory? Does anyone here have any guesses as to why?

So you got lucky. The Avid version of the same knife uses 13C26 for $37 more.
What model number is on your blade, 845 or 846?
The blades are shaped the same and human beings were involved in the manufacture of your knife......

The Model number on the blade is 846. The first time I opened the knife I noticed the BOS symbol and 13C26 underneath it. While I personally like 420HC because it is easy to sharpen, I was pleasantly surprised at the unexpected upgrade. I wonder how many more Vantage Force Selects slipped out of the factory with avid blades, or how many avids have 420HC blades. :)

do you think maybe you should send it back? It would be proper thing to do

I emailed Buck, so its their call. It might cost them more in terms of labor and shipping to exchange the blade. Then again, they should be aware that someone/some machine is creating production errors. I'm not knocking Buck here, these things happen from time to time in industry and what matters is that they are caught and corrected before too much "damage" is done.

What does the box say? Which model # is it labeled as?

The Box was labeled as "0845BKS-B" which is the Select model. What's interesting is that there were black fingerprints on the box, which matched the layer of thick black oil/ coating residue which was on the blade.

If your not happy with the 13C26 blade send it back... I'm sure they will send you a different one with the standard 420HC.... You can email me and tell me where I can send off for one... But it does happen all the time... You can find Bucklites with 112 blades and 110s with 426 blades or even S30V blades... Some of us collector's look for knives like that... So let me know who to call... Just PM me... :)

Hi EDCA,

Could be a simple packaging error. Here is a copy of an old post for an old thread.

"I went to Walmart a few months ago to check these out. They had the wood version for $19 what a deal IMHO. They also had the plastic version and wanted $30 for that one. I liked the wood better. however, of the 10 box's all marked with the wood # there was only one wood....the guy at the counter would not sell me one of the $30 plastics for the $19 price as listed on the box. That's what I get for pointing out the mistake in the first place. But, I wanted to open 10 box's of woody's and hand pick the best one;).

Here is the one I got...not bad for the price! It was the only woody in the store.

Interesting... so this happens for time to time. I have been using my new hybrid knife and the 13C26 steel cuts nicely. Feels like a lucky knife to me considering the story behind it. Could it be Buck does this on purpose as a way to promote their better steels? Now I want the S30V version too.

This same kind of mix and match issue is part of the current discussion on two vintage knives: model 107 Scout and Empress Trio Set paring knife. The fun never stops. Uh uh. A clear bright line may be a goal in life but I rarely find one in the real world. You have a Frankenfolder. :)

It may have also been that they had to fill an order and were short on the select blades and used the avid blade to complete the order.

I really dont think its an issue that needs to be "Reported" to Buck. It was probably an issue like st8yd mentioned, short on 420hc blades and used a 13c26 blade. This isn't the first time they have done this.
