Higgy,I contacted these guys back in December. They are willing to sell any quantity.Shipping will be a B!**@H,though.I am going to place a smallish order and see what their stuff is like. - Stacy

Just a question for all you Iron "experts" I have some cast Iron (I know they are because they break) sash weights from the windows I am replacing in my 1929 vintage house and am wondering if the cast iron can be worked for dimascus, guards, etc? or worked (wrought)...

Thanks!

I've never tried it, Mike. I've often wondered myself if a piece of cast could be heated and hammered down into a more-refined state. This is probably a good question for Mete, but if I had to take a stab at it I would say the composition of the iron in cast is a lot different from that of wrought.

GOOD GOSH! This stuff is fascinating, huh? :) I never tire of it.

:D You got it Hig!

It was fascinating to break one of those sash weights in half and eyeball the pretty grain, a very bright silver color! If nothing else I'll bet I can saw them into chunks and make bolsters/guards for bowies (should be "period correct" I think to use cast iron in this manner).

I was also wondering if they would make good "iron" for use in making dimascus...

If it's cast iron, it probably has 3%? carbon? This will make it too brittle for knives and probably guards too. Wrought iron is "pure" iron, very little or no carbon, with slag inclusions that give it the texture.

I think Bruce Evans told me that you could put some into a billet and it gives a nice contrast and I heard the same with WI. :D
