Last week I was talking to a coworker about finding wrought iron and he said he had an old piece of steel that he welded to his tractor and when he welded it, it seemed to be in layers. He isn't sure exactly what the steel is off of, he just knew it was old. He brought in a piece for me to try so I cut it partially and then broke it.
Can anybody tell me what it is?
Thanks,
Thad

Wrought is flakey and bark like. So I'm gonna guess yes? Grind some of it and etch it. Idk man.

I think the bottom line is that knifemakers really only care about wrought because of how it looks when etched, so I'd say go with viral, just etch it and see if you think it looks cool. If you like it then ask for some more and if not then pass ;)

I'm gonna' say "no..... cast iron".

the test you did there should have produce bent, plastic strands of iron meshed with veins of silicates, slag and crap. Yours just snapped producing a jagged, flaky edge. I say cast iron.

As well, a wrought iron bar that old and surface-rusted should show the familiar striations/lines along the edges due to weathering. I don't see any on that bar.

...... but I'm no metalurgist.:)

You don't have to be a metallurgist for this one , only an arborist !! Cut about half way through and bend . Wrought iron will have a destinct grain just like wood !! Your picture is just like cast iron !

Man that's a good hunk of some very good lookin wrought iron, I want! lol :D So do ya have any idea of what you'll try to use it for first, guard, bolster, or san mai etc.? Man let me know if you'd be interested in trading something for some if your able to get your hands on any more ;) Sorry, I'm just a sucker for wrought, and I figure it can't hurt ta plant a seed here or there :)
