Not a bad alternative Sticthawl. I have plenty of the abrasive and several sizes of those clips/clamps in the shop.
Do you hone as normal (going into the edge) or in a stropping (away from the edge) manner or do you find it doesn't matter either way when employing this method?
Thanks.
I use it exactly the same way as the stones alone, EXCEPT when I get down to the 4,000 through 10,000 grit stages. Those I do with the edge trailing as with a strop, and use almost no pressure at all! These final steps use the plastic film and my feeling is that it's not as rugged as the paper or cloth so I take extra care. Might not be needed, but as I only give about 20 strokes per side with each grit, the extra time needed for care adds up to only a minute or so. I can see the previous grit's scratch marks removed after about 10 strokes, and the last ten are
just to be sure...
For extra, extra course I use emery
CLOTH! Not paper. Really rugged stuff that takes of metal quickly for re-profiling. By the time I'm up to 320 grit I switch to wet-dry paper going from 320, 600, 1,000, 2,000, then switch to the plastic films for 4,000, 8,000, 10,000. If I really feel the need to get stupid, I'll finish with 15,000. For actually daily cutting I don't
need anything finer than 1,000. I just
want it! LOL!!
