Could someone who owns (or sells) the WS4XX (Extra-Extra Coarse) Hone which can be used with the DMT Aligner system let me know what color the plastic backer (that holds the diamond impregnated nickel surface) should be?

Many thanks for your assistance.:thumbup:

Hi,

Funny you should ask. I just ordered an XX from Amazon for my aligner. The package said XX, but the stone was a black one, which didn't match the picture on the DMT web page. XX seemed like a gray color (I think) on the website. I called DMT and they said black is an extra-coarse... and recommended I exchange it.

I just processed an exchange with Amazon... hopefully the next one will be correct... unless DMT mislabeled a whole bunch of them...

Don't bother. This is the fourth time I've been through this with amazon.com and each time they've sent the wrong item.

Each came in a blue sleeve marked as 325/Coarse but the adhesive label (on the first three) indicated WS4X. (Which is X-Coarse, not X-X Coarse.)

So this time they send the exact same thing with a new adhesive label indicating WS4Xx but it's the same black color coded hone. (XC not XXC.)

Well, this is the last straw since they obviously can't get it right. What really burns me is that they put a label on the package indicating the right product still containing the wrong item. They obviously don't realize that we take this stuff seriously. :grumpy:

The WS4XX is listed on DMT's site under the "Ski" heading when you look up their products.

The one for the Ski is a different size than the aligner stones.

Mine is gray. And I can easily feel the difference between it and the black XC with my finger. I don't have an aligner, but I do have each of the 4" plastic DMT hones, XXC through EEF. The XXC is the same size, etc. as all the others; I bought it at a snowboard place on ebay.

Mine was just like that. The stone was in a 325 grit package (blue), with a first sticker that said XC, and then another sticker on top of that labeled XXC. (I had to peel the top one to see the XC sticker underneath.)

Anyhow, thanks for the warning. It is too late... amazon is already mailing a replacement. But at least I know not to get my hopes up, expecting an actual XXC in the mail.

I wonder if the error is from Amazon or if DMT mislabeled a whole bunch of them?

I guess either way, I'll be making a trip to the post office this week to return them (the original, plus the replacement that Amazon just shipped...). *sigh*

my d.m.t. xxtra coarse is a 11.5 in. bench stone.was'nt in catalog last yr.local wholesaler got mine. great for reprofiler on pocketknives.

When I want extra, extra course I just wrap any of the stones with some 80 grit emery cloth. A 'bulldog' paper clamp (the kind that have the two foldable wings?) holds it on perfectly, costs next to nothing, and works very well. Changes the angle by less then 1/2 a degree so no problem following it up with stones alone. Sometimes I do the entire job just using wrap-arounds, using the Aligner for the angle guide only.

Great idea! I'll have to try that...

amazon.com has removed the item (WS4XX) from their available inventory once again based upon the information I provided them.

To their credit they are trying to get the issue resolved, however I won't be taking another flier on trying to get the WS4XX through them. I only did so since I had a coupon that would have covered the cost and I thought it might make a nice little addition to the arsenal. C'est la vie.

Not a bad alternative Sticthawl. I have plenty of the abrasive and several sizes of those clips/clamps in the shop.

Do you hone as normal (going into the edge) or in a stropping (away from the edge) manner or do you find it doesn't matter either way when employing this method?

Thanks. :thumbup::cool:

I use it exactly the same way as the stones alone, EXCEPT when I get down to the 4,000 through 10,000 grit stages. Those I do with the edge trailing as with a strop, and use almost no pressure at all! These final steps use the plastic film and my feeling is that it's not as rugged as the paper or cloth so I take extra care. Might not be needed, but as I only give about 20 strokes per side with each grit, the extra time needed for care adds up to only a minute or so. I can see the previous grit's scratch marks removed after about 10 strokes, and the last ten are just to be sure... :D

For extra, extra course I use emery CLOTH! Not paper. Really rugged stuff that takes of metal quickly for re-profiling. By the time I'm up to 320 grit I switch to wet-dry paper going from 320, 600, 1,000, 2,000, then switch to the plastic films for 4,000, 8,000, 10,000. If I really feel the need to get stupid, I'll finish with 15,000. For actually daily cutting I don't need anything finer than 1,000. I just want it! LOL!!

Know what you mean. I've got more stones, hones, PSA backed abrasives etc than I need but it's always nice to have the options when the fancy strikes.
