Definitely not my bag, baby, but the top one is well done.

Very nice Ren
Here is a Beck. Sorry about bad pic

Is it just me or is the grind less hollow and does it come up higher on the Beck version than on the current Tops models?

Thank God you take decent pictures Ren.... You don't even want to see the ones I took of that one..... Eeek....

Joe you are right on both accounts. The forward edge is convex and the back draw knife part is more of a hollow grind.

I've seen lots of copies of this design, and the most glaring flaw that most share is the hollow grinding. As I understand it, the forward portion of the knife is designed to be used like a hatchet, and in that instance, a convex blade geometry is much stronger and more efficient than a concave grind.

Beck's originals stand alone despite all the copies, and I don't think have ever been as well executed by another maker, judging by what I've seen over the years. Joe, you're a lucky man to have such a knife!

oh, yeah:o Credit where credit is due!

Just for reference, the only ones I hollow grind the forward portion on are the S30V blades... Reason is, S30V is a beast for the average user to sharpen, and the hollow ground ones proved much easier to sharpen for most folks.

All the D2 ones I do are flat ground on the forward portion....

The main difference you'll see between the two Ren shows is that I've decided to seam together the 2 grinds a little more to make the gut hook (I do mine as a gut hook, not a quarter rounder) more usable. It's also a little more aesthetically pleasing this way any way..

I also just started doing them without the hole b/c so many people wanted it without it... I can always add it, but I can't take it away...

Ren I just got this Martin WSK today in the mail . I am very impressed with it 1095 differentially heat treated blued blade. Of all the WSK's I have had this comes closest to feel of my Beck. Instesd of a sharp saw like notch cutter on top it has more of a rasp like file which I happen to like better . I will let you know after I try it out. The Martin's where fantastic to talk and deal with a great family. I know there are not to many WSK fans and I am not sold on the whole concept myself but I like the custom one's I have seen just another kinda neat style of knives to play with

Here it is with my Beck
