WSS Geocache Firemaking Travel Bug.

What do you guys think of this? A suggestion in This Thread was a great idea.

Let's make a travel bug or two for matchless firestarting - put a few small kits together with the essentials (A firesteel and some cotton balls, or a primative kit with flint and steel, and so on) and then set them out in a cache. We will all be able to track it, see where it goes, see who starts fire with (we will have them post a picture of themselves starting fire) and spread the WSS love.

Here is what we would need:

1) A travel bug for every kit - I will order these - I have been wanting to anyway.

2) A few full methods of starting fire (Firesteel, striker, PJ Cotton balls for one example) - I need some people to donate these and send them to me.

3) A way to keep them dry - if anyone has good methods for keeping these dry and clean (bottles, small gasket kits and so on) that would be great.

4) A geocache container - Old Army Ammo cans are the best - but these can be a small container that is tough and keeps dry - essentially anything you have seen people use for a secure bullet proof PSK would be great.

5) Any WSS SWAG that you want to have people collect. A patch or anything small, or handmade, would be great. This would just get our name out there even more.

I will assemble the stuff - place the geocache (I will call it Blade Forums Wilderness & Survival Skills Firestarting Geocache) and maintain it in my area. When a bug gets taken - I will replace the firestarting kits until we run out. I will buy Travel Bugs until I run out of firestarting kits.

What say you? Who is in?

OH - and as a hard cache - for the Bug Brian is sending - I will make a Bow Drill set with one of his blades, and put it out there for those that are willing to try.

I will need a LARGE container for this one - but rest assured - I will find one - I saw someone using a Document carrying case as a Geocache the other day - that should work well (you know - the ones for rolled up Blue Prints?

I like the idea, however I'm not sure we want people necessarily starting fires all over the place if they don't know what they're doing or respect being responsible for one... I would hate a brush fire to have been started as the result of a geocaching mishap...

That being said, great idea! I just wish we could count on others to be as responsible as we here on the forums are...

You can attach instructions to your Travel Bug - and on www.geocaching.com you give full instructions on how to treat the Bug. Why don't I simply attach the instructions to point to a video or other web page that speaks of being safe?

I don't think they are going to simply whip it out and bust a fire right where they are standing - I will have a warning on it not to do so.

Also:

I forgot about some firesteels that I made a while back - so I can make a few with these - anyone else want in?

One cache me and my son found was made from plumbing pvc, glued together with pvc glue and had a screw on top if that will give you an idea how to make something for the bow drill kit.

i'm down for setting one or two in the BC area of Canada, but i need someone with a gps so we can get coordinates.

Isn't anything that can make fire banned from Geocaches?

No. Here is the closest rules I could find:

"Use your common sense in most cases. Explosives, fireworks, ammo, lighters, knives (including pocket knives and multi-tools), drugs, alcohol or other illicit material shouldn't be placed in a cache. As always respect the local laws. Geocaching is a family activity and cache contents should be suitable for all ages."

But this is not a general thing we are dropping in all cache's. This would be a Travel Bug. They all have their own rules. I did a search but did not find anyone else doing this.

I posted in at the forums they use to see if it was scary to them. I think if they can call on 'Common Sense' in the rules - so can we in the Travel Bug.

We will see.

Here was one reply:

"Almost anything used as a traveller in a TB can be dangerous....... one way or another. You can't really be responsible for how somebody else may use it........ unless it is something designed as and intended to be used as a weapon or similar dangerous object.
There have been (folding) knives and other tools as travellers (not really smart, and strongly recommended against), but your firesteel doesn't hold a candle (sorry!) to those."

Check out this one - it is one of a BUNCH of knife ones:

Sounds like we are legit!

Let's go with this bad boy! Any help would be appreciated. I have all the stuff to do my own - but it would be cool to do it as a group thing!

Sounds good to me...I'd like to get one going down here in South Alabama...

Okay - I found four firesteels around here (I forgot about them) and I put handles on them and found a striker or two.

I just need to get bugs and a good cache.

Any help would be great.

Man, I really need to get started in geocaching. Sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe I need to start shopping for a cheap GPS unit.

I have a Garmin 60CSx that I love. This is probably more GPS than needed though.

Look around as prices seem to be dropping. I'd also check out the for sale section over at geocaching.com. You may find someone selling a good unit that just had to have the newest one with all the bells.

Yeah I have looked around a little and the 60CSx is supposed to be one of the best it looks like. I might have to ask for a used entry level model for my birthday so I can get started.

Look at that DeLorme PN-30 - it was on super sale this weekend at REI - I am wagering that it will be on sale other places.

I think it would be fun. I tried to make a forum specific case a while back but it didn't work to well.

I know Caine and I geocache at random times. I may have a place that could make the coin if you want.
