I have a problem, i have three daughters 7,6 and 3 and i would like to introduce them to knives. I was thinking about a Pink or limegreen Sheepfoot Ladybug or jester. Can anyone tell me if they were ever made and if and where i can find them. This way i can calm down my wife when my girls are carrying one of MY Spyderco's. I don't mind them carrying my cricket, but i don't like them to carry my Civilian, Karambit or my Military!!

This might sound stupid and i hope i won't get flamed by it but i saw a knifestand with "children knives" from a french firm Opinel, they had a wooden handle, were stainless steel and had a rounded tip, but were sharp. I thought this was a great idea. I understand that in the current times it is "tricky" to produce knives for youngsters, but it might be a good idea to make affordable, simple, "safe" sturdy small spyderco's

I'm not flaming, but in my humble opinion only .... even a 7 year old is too young for any really sharp knife. My son is a Boy Scout ... and I just posed the question to him. His answer was that it depends on the individual, but 6th or 7th grade earliest.

My last "Spydie-bite" is just healing up. What happens if one of your sweeties gets a nasty "Spydie-bite" while alone. My facination with knives led me to a nasty grade school incident with my grandfather's super sharp pocket knife that I've never forgotten. Even so ... I still suffer Spydie and other knife bites from time to time.

This one is from the heart. No flames intended.

i know, i get bitten with my spydies al the time.
Euh, but if they get bitten , so what? It heals, doesn't it? If i tell my daughters not to touch a burning candleflame, they always still seem to try if it is really hot. I tell them afterwards "Don't even think i will feel sorry for u, Daddy told u so". I grew up and have cut myself hundreds of times, fell out of trees, broke bones, strained muscles, hey i even have scars. But does this mean i should keep my children away from all dangers in life? Isn't it better to put some dangers in the learningproces?
The reason i am looking for a "safe" children knife is because my dauther got a slight cut from a neighbourhood boy, ON HER BACK, with my S.P.O.T., i gave to her! What did she learn from the expirience? Knives are sharp, cuts hurt, don't lend any weapons to the neighbourhood fool, don't turn your back to anyone with a knife, Dad was right.
No harm done, the cut healed without a scar, she learned a valuable lesson!
This might look rather primitive, but if we look at what our forefathers did, it was the same, right? They all grew up as normal people right?

:)

Loki,
I got a pink PE Jester for my wife's keychain. I got it from New Graham in the Spyderco Discontinued section. I think they only have serrated now though...

New Graham do have PE and serrated lime green Jesters on page 5 of the main Spyderco section.

Try the Spyderco site. They may still have the sheepsfoot and jesters on sale at a great price in their "discontinued" section (I bought a couple last week). But remember those little buggers are just as sharp as the larger knives!

I'd say 6, 7 is fine - just make sure you take lots of time to go thorough basic safety. It would also be worth mentioning basic etiquette - i.e. some people are terrified of knives, so don't take it to school, don't wave it around, use it for a purpose and put it back in your pocket. That depends a bit on the community atmosphere where you are.

As far as "first knives" a small fixed blade is a great learning model. I saw New Graham had some spyderco vagabonds in stock. Depending on size, these might be very good. After that, I'd go with an Opinel. Cheap, simple lock, various sizes so that you can get a perfect fit. Also, they're pretty easy to modify. If you can't find the "children's model", or it doesn't come in the right size, a bit of time with a bench stone will give you a suitably blunt tip. Handle can also be carved to fit.

In the spyderco department, Jester is excellent, so long as it's not TOO small - it takes a little experience to figure out how to keep fingers off a sharp blade, and a larger knife that gives a full-hand grip might be easier to open, close and use. Moving up in size, a FRN dragonfly might even be a bit better than the Jester. Up from that, the Native finger notch would be very secure.

Black FRN isn't quite as attractive as the pink or lime green options. However, I've always suspected that model paint (like for plastic airplanes, cars, etc.) would be great for recoloring a handle. Even enamel nail polish might work - I imagine it would stay around for a long time down in the handle grooves. This would be a great little project. If you do it, please post pics! I'd love to see the perfect Spyderco in the mind of a 7-year-old girl!

ok i asked them about the project, but they seemt to want a pink barbie/horseriding/soccer Spyderco with colourfull beads on!!!
Hmmm
OK why not
Just hope Sal doesn't sue me !!!! :D
