Yep, I'm looking for a full flat grind knife for my brother's birthday gift. He's not light on his tools so need something robust and he likes flat grinds. Now I know he's not a Spyderco fan and I don't have the $ for a Strider so they're out. Any other suggestions appreciated.

What exactly is your price range? How large of a blade? I assume thick and wide, but how long?

Just off the top of my head I'd say a Spydie Para-Military, but you said he doesn't like those. So what else... It's not flat grind, but I'd imagine it cuts very well being sort of a high hollow grind I suppose. A Benchmade 710.

Also, again not flat grind, but a Zero Tolerance 0200 should be quite robust and a great heavy duty knife, and you could have Tom Krein make it a flat grind... but I've no idea what he charges. The ZT 0500 MUDD looks to be a flat ground to my eyes.

What about a nice smaller fixed blade like the Benchmade Activator?

A ballpark price would be helpful.

Most of the FFG blades I am familiar with are Spyderco.

What about something like the Benchmade (mini) Dejavoo? It has a "high ground utility" blade, but close enough to FFG.

Another option would be to choose a knife you feel he would really like regardless of the grind, and then send it in to be reground to FFG by Tom Krein.

Yes, price would've been nice to mention... Duh. Sorry guys. Well, I guess I could top it at $150. Good suggestions so far. I forgot about Krein'ing whatever knife I get him. That definitely opens up the field to .... just about anything, really, I guess.

Id say benchmade mini-rukus its not a full flat grind but it is real close and tough as nails. Plus it has the axis lock.

Another one for....

I do not have one but the Kershaw Tyrade looks to be an awesome knife that your brother may like.

That being said... a lot of people do not like spydies until they use them. If your brother has never used a Spyderco you could be doing him a favor by buying his first.

Mistaken about what?

Sorry,I should've been clearer.

MichaelScarn described the Manix2 as "S90V Manix2 FFG"

I'm pretty sure the Manix2 is CPM154 & hollow ground.Anyway,I meant he was mistaken about the description & not the knife itself.I'm sure it's a great knife.

A 400 piece sprint run of the Manix 2 came out a few days ago with s90v steel, full flat grind, and carbon fiber scales.
