I sawed the pelvis and a leg bone and about 15-20 of the tips of the teeth are chipped off. WTF

is this normal? is a Hunting Knife with a saw not ment for sawing bone?

is there something wrong with mine?

er yeah, that's really not supposed to happen. It sounds like the teeth on the saw weren't heat treated properly. As a result, it becomes brittle. You ask for you money back.

Welcome to Bladeforums! I'll move this thread to the SOG forum for you -- the guys at SOG will want to hear about this.

Is the AUS-8 steel diff than AUS-6? I'm guessing it's a softer grade but it seems to be hardened more.

I was thinking about getting a Seal pup but this has me thinking a bit.

Skywlkr, sorry about the saw, it should not chip like that, I know several hunters that have field dressed about a dozen deer each so far with no problems with chipping. But one of my buddies did get into a rock with his and it removed about 20 of the tips of his saw, but it still cut like butter amazingly, I tried it. :D .
Contact SOG by phone 1-888-SOG-BEST, or email warranty at warranty@sogknives.com , explain what the problem is and I am sure they will take care of it. The AUS-8 steel is a very good steel, I have had no problems at all with mine.
There are lots of reviews/test on the Revolver series and the SEAL pup knife that you can read that should make you feel better about these knives. I just looked at the pic of the teeth, they are broken, but not as bad as I thought they would be, looks like just the very tips.

It seems that what I would recommend has already been done. But please contact our warranty department and they will see what can be done about correcting this problem. They can be reached at warranty@sogknives.com or 888-764-2378 x229. If you are not able to get a hold of the warranty department please feel free to contact me (marketing@sogknives.com) and I will assist and getting this resolved.

Thanks
Chris

I sent an E-mail and received a canned reply to send it in for the warranty guys to look at it.

It still seems to cut OK (I cut up a ham bone last night to check it's effective ness), seemed a little harder but it could have been a heavier bone.

I'll try and send it in this week.

Thanks for the reply's

So the AUS-8 is better than AUS-6?

AUS-8 better in what way? I'm guessing just in edged holding and hardness (maybe more brittle though?).

AUS-6 is used in the Seal and Seal pup and a few other fighters, is it softer because of a need for more flexability or better anti corrosion?

AUS8 has more carbon, so it's harder and more brittle. The AUS6 is more impace resistant and less wear resistant and less prone to rust
