new member here with a few Benchmade questions.
i have an opportunity to buy a BM705-02 but i am confused. what are the main differences between the 705 and the 705-02? also what is a D2 blade, any better than ATS34?

The standard 705 has g-10 handles, while the 705-02 has anodized aluminum handles with g-10 inserts. The standard 705 has 154CM steel, and it is a stainless steel, while D2 is not(its semi-stainless, just doesn't quite have enough chromium to be stainless). D2 will rust a little easier than 154CM in other words. With a little care it shouldn't be a problem. D2 will have better edge retention when compared to 154CM. Also, the standard 705 can come with or without the teflon coated blade, while the -02 comes only coated. This coating reduces corrosion, but is prone to scratching.

since i will be using the knife for EDC should i just get the 705 and leave the 02 for the real enthusiasts?

thanks for the help.

If you don't mind teflon coated blades, I'd go with the 02. D2 is the superior steel of the two. I don't like the BT coating, personally, because it scratches. It does provide excellent corrosion resistance though. Either way you'll end up with a fine edc knife.

D2 is a leap and a bound over 154cm in my opinion. It takes a great edge and holds it for a LONG time. However, it isn't easy to sharpen. And with the black coating, rusting shouldn't be a problem.

i made my decision... i got the 710-02 at an excellent price. thanks for all of the help fellas i will see you around the boards here.
