Just picked up my son from his weekend outing with his local Civil Air Patrol Squadron. They conducted a search and rescue exercise in Pocahontus County WV. He had a great time; they do land nav, wilderness first aid, tracking (for downed pilot); etc other outdoor skills. They are broken up into ground teams for the search (Squads, fire teams are examples of this). He told me they got a little lost due to lack of land nav skills by there Team Leader (this is an adult not a youth). So I took the opportunity for a teaching point on importance of land nav and being able to read a map and use terrain association. Anyway we talked more and he told me they found the downed pilot - low and behold it was Dave Canterbury. I know not everyone is a fan of him but it was pretty cool for him to come and do this. He got the kids together and talked to them for about 15 minutes about outdoor skills. My son came hope pretty stoked about it so I thought I would share.

very cool -- I was in CAP when I was in high school.
already knowing how to march helped a bit when I hit boot camp.

That's pretty awesome MM, thanks for posting that. CAP is/was a blast for kids. I loved it.

Major, that's pretty cool! CAP is a great program from all that I've heard. It's cool to hear of Mr. Canterbury doing something like that as well.

Dave is always doing stuff like that, especially stuff with kids groups. He's doing a youth archery thing this coming weekend at his school for free. Then, the kids get all the free stuff in class. He'll ask them some trivia over something we just learned and then give them goodies. I saw him give away (to kids) a BHK Bushcrafter, a TOPS Pathfinder School knife, Guyot SS Bottles, Strike Force firestarters, you name it.

That is really neat. I think that they have a CAP here in our area. Might be something interesting for my 14 yr old.

I have seen where Dave dows free stuff for kids and if you attend one of his training classes and you bring a youth that youth is free. Didn't know about the free give away stuff.

Hawk - my son will be 13 in two weeks and loves it. He bounces back and forth between Civil Air Patrol and Boy Scouts as his favorite thing to do. But he really loves what he does with CAP - it has the military spin that he thinks is awesome.

Glad he had a good time Major! We should make him and mine do some land nav stuff to practice this summer.

Man, that is some kind of cool.

I was CAP and SAR, and the skills they teach are some of the best. Hate they had some land nav issues, but I'll be honest, I never put much stock in land nav until I got my ass seriously lost.

Now, I don't consider myself a master, but I know my way around the map and compass, well enough to teach it.

Great post Major and welcome, you come highly recommended by your friends. Look forward to meeting you someday.

very nice of Mr. Canterbury.....I do not know him in the flesh, but seems a good guy.... hope to meet him and hang out some.....Never knew much about CAP and frankly I thought that the organisation had gone south for good.....Glad the rumors of it's demise were overstated...... a good CAP group can have an awesome effect on people.....Hope to put a meeting with you on the calendar too......Any friend of Derek's, etc.....

All Best....

He might have his own deals with BHK and Habilis, but I've heard with my own ears him speak very highly of Becker Knives. And there are ALWAYS Beckers in attendence at his classes....in my small class I think there were 3 Bk2s, 1 Bk9, and at least one necker. The rest were either Kabar or BHK. Nothing else!

Derek - I like the idea of that; we definately should make that happen.

Moose - been there myself (lost that is) not a good feeling. Look forward to meeting you one day as well.

Mr. Becker - CAP is alive and well here in West-By-God!!! The local Squadron here is very active; their numbers have dropped some but it varies all year due to other activities the kids are involved in. Baseball and basketball seem to be the biggest competition. Look forward to a meeting as well; Derek had me recruited to come to gathering but I have work obligation to attend next weekend.

Best Regards

Major
