just pulled this out of a basement. worth restoring ? or just a wall hanger now?..........looks to be a late model NCO sword.

about what i figured. maybe ill stabilize the rust and set it in a corner for another 70yrs until somebody else finds it.

I'd clean the blade and tsuba up a bit and get the main rust off. Wire brush or steel wool the saya to get it looking better. Work some leather restorer into the tsuka. Leave everything as old and well used, but not destroyed.

If it will disassemble, that would make the job easier, but the tsuka is likely frozen on the nakago ... don't force it.

i saw a similar sword with the same spring lock for the scabbard. but the handle had ray skin with a cord wrap. that sword might have been restored earlier and a wooden handle installed. from what i read about war accounts, those things still didn't come cheap. lt. cmdr. tameichi hara in his book "japanese destroyer captain" begged off on having a sword made and instead monetized the cost to buy booze for his entire crew.

If someone (like me) wanted to buy one of these, in not quite as rough condition, where would I look? I've checked eBay but I worry when most/all of the auctions seem to be coming from mainland China.
