Not2Sharp...hey thanks for the quick reply...just got in from a car trip to Texas where I picked up this knife from a brother....somewhere in that car is my digital camera....soon...and thanks again....can I post pix in this forum???

The only mark is on the blade top, middle. Russell...handle is wood, by my eye....I was wondering if it was a general issue or was carried over by a GI...

It is a civilian knife. However, during the second world war, the military collected and issued just about everything it could get it's hands on. That included many old knives donated by civilians. The troops of course picked up everything the military might have missed.

If it is just marked "RUSSELL" it is probaby pre-1933. Is there an arrow going through the word "russell"?

sounds like one of the old russell green river knives...?...maybe?

oh by he way the old russell barlow knives were made by the same company. they started out on the banks of the green river in Mass. (1834) making chisels, axes, later making knives (the old trade knives, also for skinners, ect.). Then toward the turn of the century they went into barlows (were pretty inexpensive).

rev_jch right it's a Russell & Co., Green River Works circa 1900 called a "Thistle-Top" hunter.
