I have a small collection of WWI military knives. These first four are examples of pattern 6353. These are all about 5 inches long and very heavy. The first knife is actually pre WWI (c 1905-1913) Made by Hunter Sheffield and marked with the broad arrow I for use in India. The original stag spec was changed in 1913.

The remainder are WWI knives. The next is Joseph Rodgers & Sons with checkered horn handle and marked and the broad arrow and W D for War Department stamped on the spike.

The remaining three were used by the Canadian forces. A checkered horn handle made by Geo Wostenholm & Son with a horn handle and the Canadian acceptance mark on the spike.

An all metal knife made by Thomas and Turner & Co. Marked with M & D for Militia and Defense. Also 405 not sure but perhaps a unit number?

Last but not least... a Schatt and Morgan PA made for the Canadian forces circa 1915.

I hope these are of interest.

s-k,very cool,What is that small blade for ?
-Vince

Thanks Vince. The stubby blade is a tin opener for rations. The protruding bit was used to open the attachment (no nail nick except the S & M) and also rested on the edge of the tin as the blade was worked around.

Greyelm beat me to the answer. Thanks very much for your replies.

I like the Schatt the best of 'em I think ,the bone on it is really nice

Some great knives, S-K! I'd love to spend some time admiring your collection up close.

Very cool S-K! I can't remember ever seeing checkered horn before.
But I really NEED that Schatt.

I really enjoy looking at these knives. Sometimes they get looked at a little too much.;);)

SK thank you. We are very fortunate to be able to see some of the knives in your collection.

Beautiful and informative, thanks for sharing, s-k. I really like the color of the Sheffield stag--the English know their way around stag, don't they? Love the S&M, too. Very nice jigging.

Very interesting and these knives could tell a tale or two-not always very nice ones either...

Be excellent to see some other Great War knives from France & Germany and the other nations to see how their styles differ.

Excellent collection S-K, I'd have a hard time picking out a favorite among that fine bunch.
Here's a Canadian military (post WWII sailors and aircrew) made by Case "Metal Stampings Limited":

Nice one Eric. It looks to be in excellent condition. One of the very few to include the old style tin opener that late.

Thanks very much to everyone for your positive responses. They are greatly appreciated. Glad you enjoyed the collection.

Sk you are in fact the man. I love the variety of knives you share with us. If I ever make it to Bedford I'll Shoot you a PM because I've got to see that collection with my own two eyes. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks very much for the compliment. Are you based in the UK? You're welcome to drop by. Please give me a few days notice though to tidy-up the place :D
